Sex On The Wing of an Airplane

Pulitzer Prize winner Dan Neil of the L.A. Times review the clubman

Now they've gone and made it bigger.

This could be problematic.

So, is the Mini Clubman still adorable, or does it look like Hello Kitty with a glandular problem? Is it every bit the dancing leprechaun as the regular Mini, or does it stumble like a drunken Irishman? The original was such a singular thing, a 300 game, a no-hitter. How can you change it without lousing things up?

And yet behold a bigger, better Mini.
The whole article is worth definitely worth the read.

Funny. I just road in one today with a fellow Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and he hated it.

Yes...good things to say about all MINIs, and most certainly the Clubman...for those of you who "couldn't wedge their fat-soft lifestyles into the regular car."

The Clubbie does handle amazingly well!!

Wow, what a great review. He didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know, but I sure enjoyed reading it.

nice review ... but:

Base price: $27,100

Price, as tested: $35,000 (est.)
is this a "special" LA price?

I love the way Dan writes - he's the man. Many, many moons ago, soon after he started writing his first auto column for our local paper here, I thought he was the most entertaining writer in the auto industry. I eagerly awaited his review every week. Local boy, and alum of my alma mater, done good.

Plus, he has GREAT taste in cars.

It's funny...he makes a lot of classic Mini references. I know we get that but does anybody else out there?

that maybe so with all the options for particular ones ... but base is $24,100 NOT $27,100 as the article claims.

might have been a misprint though

And what a great review! I think he liked it.

Sex on the wing of an airplane.

The LA Times ran a great article about the MINI and the Clubman. It includes these quotes:

"The Mini is diamond-laced Champagne, a piano-playing Shetland pony, sex on the wing of an airplane. Simply put, if the Mini Cooper doesn't put a smile on your face, you're dead."

"It's my considered opinion that the BMW Mini Cooper is the most successful car design of the last 20 years. What can touch it? Here's a car that puts a spearmint thrill through you every time you turn the key, a larking, capering, glass-and-steel nymph that nicks past other traffic like it's mired in molasses. On top of the giddy charge of merely wheeling the thing, you've got this utterly charismatic styling, a po-mo masterpiece, a rolling tribute to the iconic Mini (1959 to 2000) designed by Alec Issigonis and built by the British Motor Corp."

Cool, yes?
