No, it doesn't anymore because the car no longer uses a mechanical keylock cylinder.

Instead you have an electronic keyslot where you insert the key (It is a key reader) and this enables the computer to recognize the keycode and start the engine via start/stop button.

I dont think not locking has anything to do with ignition lock cylinders. I have a Suburban and a GMC truck and neither one of them lock either. Come to think of it, our Mustang didnt lock either. Maybe mfgr's are just going away from the lock.

I cant remember a car that I have owned since the late 70's that didn't lock..

but it sort of makes sense..

Good angle. My father-in-law ran into that towing their GMC Envoy. He tried strapping the wheel to the brake....didnt work. That thing was still all over the place. Needless to say, he doesn't tow it anymore.

something I had not considered....

I am starting to guess that BMW/MINI is so confident that the car cannot be stolen, that it would be pointless for a steering lock.

It just came as a bit of a shock to me...

My '05 R53 S locks the steering wheel as every other MINI ('02 & '04) and have owned before it and the Clubman. The Clubman is the first car I have owned with an electronic keyslot and engine push button starter. I also owned 2 Chevy Impalas with GM's Passlock system (Different from Passkey) and those did not lock the steering either. The key cylinder was located in the dash, not the steering column. In new Impalas the key cylinder was moved to the steering column and now they use Passkey. All Hondas and Acuras I owned all locked the steering wheel as well.
