Clubman a station wagon???

People keep referring to my one week old Clubman as a station wagon. I debated a good friend on that for several days but I let the comments slide when coming from strangers.
So who here thinks the Clubman is a wagon; and if not what do you call it?

I'm not sure about the station wagon part....I refer to it as the "longer one".

the clubman IS a station wagon....nothing wrong with that

Definition:
A station wagon or simply wagon in American, Australian and New Zealand usage and an estate car or just estate in British usage is an automobile with a body style similar to a sedan (saloon in British usage) but with an extended rear cargo area.
The clubman is just like the Cooper but with an extended cargo area.....a station wagon. Even the old long version of the clubman was reffered to as the Mini/Clubman Estate which is the equivalent of 'wagon' over here.

Sure it's a wagon...

... so was the Chevy Nomad, and the Volvo P1800ES. It sure isn't Granddads Vista Cruiser.

If it really eats at you, just tell them that it is your shooting brake. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting-brake

The Clubman is a wagon. The wagon layout is very practical with fold down rear seats and open tail gate. That is one reason it is still at the top of our short list for our next car. For us, it is a direct replacement for our current wagon ( minus 5.3 ft in length, 55 cubic ft of cargo space, 3.4 liters of engine, and 1500 lbs of steel ).

The NY DMV classifies it a station wagon, for what that's worth.

That's interesting to read miniclubman.

MINI wagon - station or not - it's all fine with me.

I guess technically it is a wagon. Okay with me - the classic's were a huge hit as I expect the Clubman to be.

Technically, it is a "shooting brake" and not a wagon. European sports cars that were sold in a longer version or with an extended roof to carry gear or dogs, etc. were referred to as shooting brakes (Jensen Healeys, Volvo P1800ES, BMW Z3, even the Jaguar XJ-S!).

MINI USA wishes that it not be referred to as a station wagon, but ultimately the public will decide that since this isn't Europe where that terminology does not exist. It is probably more of an Estate car ... although I am a fan of BMW's "Touring" designation and Audi's "Avant". I don't let anyone call my 325xi Touring a wagon, heehee.

Interestingly enough though, many MINI dealers are calling it a station wagon. (See attached thumbnail)

State Farm insurance put S/W on my insurance card. Sometimes wagons are given lower rates.

The next time somebody say, it's a station wagon, tell them hell yes, and it's fricken awesome! The British also refer to it as an "Estate", but that sounds stuffy.

ITTAZVIC,

Not sure how my insurance company is listing it, but we are replacing my wife's 10 year old Honda Accord for the Mini and Insurance went up $2 every six months. Now that's fricken awesome!

All things considered, I think this is the only vehicle considered a station wagon that I actually want to own! Plus, no one expects it to be the amazing machine it is...and that's what makes this wagon even better.

Let me put it this way:

I'd rather be told that I had a nice looking station wagon rather than "Nice minivan!" or "Nice SUV!"

Station wagons are where it's at!

I personally think it's just a hatchback still but I bet people associate hatchbacks with cheap cars and they'd rather designate it as a wagon.

With barn doors, ain't no way it's a hatchback. It don't have a hatch in the back.

One thing it's not is a hatchback! Hatchbacks have a vertical lift hatch, and a sloped rear deck.

Maybe you would prefer calling it an 'estate' version? :D

My dealer's website calls the body style a "wagon." I guess that's accurate according to the definitions people posted here. Still, it's not the woody station wagon your grandparents drove - this wagon is shorter than even my VW New Beetle!
