Took our automatic Clubman for it's first road trip this weekend...Lake of the Ozarks near KC. About a 300 mile round trip, some on straight highway a lot on twisty hilly roads. I have a lead foot, we drove fast and passed a lot in "passing gear" (Love to feel that second turbo kick in, the little car is super fast). OBC said 29 overall which I didn't think was too bad considering my driving habits and the roads plus the car only has 1000 miles on it. So no complaints here, first time I went to the Lake and back on one tank of gas since the 70's. Plus my Triumph Club buddies loved it.

Let's say, a non S and an S model clubman are both holding a constant 70 mph down a stretch of highway for an hour. In this case, would their mileage be the same because there's no acceleration to factor in? Or would the non S still get better mileage?

Would the S get better mileage for holding 70 potentially at a lower RPM?

Assuming they are both using the cruise control?

You would think so given the S has a 3.647 final drive as compared to the non s at 4.353. Although the s has a .8163 overdrive as compared to the non s with.683. Come you mechanical engineers out there, do the math. Dan

I remember hearing from someone on the OL that they actually tried this, and the S used more gas, even though they drove both cars at the same speed.

I'm on my third tank in my Clubman S, just at 1,000 miles. I did an easy 55-65 mpg on central Idaho's highways for 280 miles. Got 41.1mpg. (hand calculated), that works for me.

Filled up the clubbie yesterday. I have 3500 miles on it. 60/40 highway/city, nothing over 70mph, some AC. OBC said 37.4 and by hand 39.3mpg. My computer always reads 1-2 mpg lower than hand calculated. It seems everybody else says there OBC reads high.

So far my OBC seems to be about 2 miles per gallon over what I calculate with my higher math skills.

At 567 miles on my new Clubby; 28.5mpg....all city. Second full tank yesterday with 93 octane from Quick Trip, so I think any lesser quality gasoline that may have been in my tank is now gone.

I'll report at next fillup.

I'm only about 150 miles into my first tank, and my OBC says 25.8 right now. It has read 25-point-something since mile 11 (my first mile driven).

I see some folks in the high 30s and low 40s and my eyes pop out like a cartoon character that just saw a pretty girl. Amazing. Don't know how you're all doing it. (I understand all the variables like city/highway, driving habits, locale, etc, but the numbers are wildly different.)

I am interested to see how well I do over the next 4 or 5 tanks. Especially when compared to folks like JGS and hollyross, who seem to have similarly new Clubbies getting similar mpg.

Folks -- please keep posting results over time.

This is a great thread.

No significant difference between mid grade and super so far. Did have an oil change the first day of this mid grade tank. Will share numbers with super fill up - average seems to be consistant.

If the non s gets much better mileage and the car tests out to not be a slug, I just might go with the Justa. Just curious and also confused. Thanks, Dan
Get the S - comparing the two, the gas mileage does not seem to be a factor, it is the initial cost that seems to be the "make or break" for most.

4. Rinse and Repeat
The numbers I list include reseting all of the computer info on each fill up - including the avg MPH and the avg MPG

Thanks - and it does help when people include avg MPH, computer (OBC) and hand calculated MPG, and type of Clubman (Auto, manual, S or non S)

Done 500 miles so far, my Clubman S started out exactly the same way, after about 200 miles, the MPG started climbing as i started doing more long trips and freeway driving. The max i have gotten on one trip was an average of 37.5 mpg but with most of my city driving i get around 32. This is all calculated with the OBC and i know it can be a little inaccurate but i'm not so bothered by that, it's close enough.

Hope this helps... Enjoy the next 1000 miles

i am assuming that EVERYONE does reset the Average MPG part of the OBC at EVERY fillup to get their readings ... right?

especially those of you that are getting inconsistncies between OBC and manual calc?

I use the trip computer on the NAV for individual trips and the other meter on my steering column is separate to that system so it gives me the MPG's for the life of the car so far.

Yes, I do that...and I'm still getting good mpgs.. Today I compared the OBC to my higher math calculations and the higher math was 2 mpgs less than the OBC...that's not a biggie to me, so I'll be stickin' with my OBC most of the time and feeling quite fine about it. But I'm repeating myself here.

As that article in today's NY Times pointed out - speed has a ton to do with mpgs. You can't go too slowly and you can't go to fassssst. And no gunning it at those red lights, either: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/17/ny...20limit&st=cse Beware the reptile brain!

Just had to buy gas for the first time.

Ran 370 miles on 13.11 gallons -- 28.22 mpg.

I would say I had about 60% highway -- although some of it was on 60mph roads but with lights and some traffic. You stop and go some.

Anyway -- finally get to make a contribution to this effort. Good to be motoring.

Here is what we have gotten so far.

First tank of gas we got 34.5mpg, I can not remember the exact numbers but we got somewhere around 400 miles on that first tank.

Second tank of gas was just a top off before a trip and we got 37.2 mpg and had driven like 127miles

ON the third tank we have gotten around 41mpg.

All of these are with a city highway mix. I will try to give more detailed info later.

Tank #4...30 mpg, just like tanks 2&3.
I guess I've been driving the same ratio of highway/city for a couple months.

I usually drive about 72 mph (~75 mph, then subtract BMW's lovely offset ) on the highway, and have been getting about 36-37 mpg. Today I drove a fairly flat section between Binghamton & Corning, about 75 miles, and with the A/C on. However, this time I slowed to 65 mph (~67 displayed). At the end of the trip, the computer said 40.4 mpg - my first time at or above 40! There is one problem, however. Even though it is only 7 mph slower, I almost fell asleep! I am not sure I can keep it at 65, although it was a worthwhile trial. But... A couple dollars of gas savings may not be cheaper than a car in the ditch.

I ditched my 15" wheels after the first tank for my 18" and yes I did notice a drop in the MPG from computed 35 to about 30-32 mostly in town.
I just got back from a Florida trip 1250 miles over all and one thing I really notice.
I have always tried to use TOP TIER gas because my MA said if I did I could use their mid-grade. There was a couple times I could not find a Texaco or Chevron and decided to us premium of other brands.........here is the problem........
1 tank was ok not much difference but the 2nd tank had 10% ethanol and my mileage dropped 2 mpg or more down to 30....next tank was Chevron mid and mpg jumped back up to 34.
I am going to do my best to stat away from the ethanol mix stuff.
