I've never had a cargo box because my previous car had more room. But now, I am considering getting a cargo box for extended trips. Can you fit a lot in it? What kind of packages can you carry in it?

Both the wife and the dog? No man, the dog looks like a great traveling companion!

That looks great!

I take it you're not having any issues w/the MINI rack then?

I think its sturdy enough for the box but not for a full standing mountain bike. Or at least a $ 3k bike

re Roof Rack

My Clubie should be done end of July. I ordered the OEM rack (I'll have to see if I actually get it). I plan on using a longer Thule roof box like the Atlantis 2100 or the Cascade 1700. I have 8 snowboards and a few of them are 75 inches long. My goal is to take the Clubman camping with my whole family, a 4 1/2 year old and a 3 year old. The larger Thule boxes can store a town of gear in them. I was able to get 12 snowboards with bindings into Thule box.
I'll post pictures of the longer roof box once I get my ride. I am not sure I can stand waiting another month though Is anyone else having the same issue

I thought the max capacity of the rack was 160 pounds. Aren't you going to be crowding that a bit?

Jupiterfish,
That looks great!

How much do the three boards + gear weigh? What about the cool box empty?

What is your experience in rain with the rack?

Does anyone know whether the Atlantis 1800 or 2100 will fly w/the clubman rack system? The OEM rack cross bars can not be spread apart any further, I understand they are locked into position. The Thule does have some ability to move the f/r bar grabbers (not sure the official name), looks like the 1600 is game on, but not sure the larger boxes will work.

I was able to fit a travel power wheelchair in the boot (tried it on the test drive), but I have two kids as well and want the roof box for a stroller and the 2 tons of crap you need to take a 30 pound kid on a trip

With the rubber rain gutters i would not want to put any type of Thule or Yakima rack on the Clumban it would probably just fly off when you got up above 30 mile an hour. The rain gutters are very flexible and will not hold any wight or pressure against them.

As for the bars being spaced they are 29.4 inches apart on the Clubman Most boxes should be able to be adjusted to that. I know the largest Yakima can do it. I have one.

I just got back from a trip down the shore (3000 miles round trip) with my wife, teen age daughter, and four year old daughter. I have the standard MINI roof box, it was packed with a beach bag, beach umbrella, tripod, cycling duffel bag, toddlers beach chair and literally 100 lbs of clothing. Rather than using a suitcase, we put the clothes into 2XL Zip-lock bags. They stack nicely and protect against any weather and bugs.

We hit a large storm driving through Indianapolis, but I did not find any water inside the box once we got to our destination.

Over all, it was an excellent addition, and easy to take off and store away while we were vacationing.

If my dealer installs the roof rack when I get my S I will be borrowing my buddies Atlantis 2100, I'll post pictures once I get it installed. I hope the larger boxes will fit, I'll need the space for all the trips I do for snowboarding and winter camping.

Snowboarding i can see but winter camping. It gets cold in Massachusetts, Not to mention the snow. How do you wet up a tent in 2-3 feet of snow.

I really hope my Clubbie has the traction that i am told they have so that i can get up to the mountains for for some skiing this coming winter.

As for the box, i will be trying by old but reliable Yakima Rocket Box this evening. I will post some pics with it on the car. It will hold more skies and stuff than i can carry people in my Clubbie.

Thanks for sharing jupiterfish! That Thule box looks just right on the Clubman. I've been a Yakima guy for years, and they have a "Skybox 16" that is a little (7") longer than the Thule Atlantis 1600. I wonder if that would make much of a difference - I guess it will depends on where that 7" ends up with respect to the front cross bar.

Thanks again - looks good!

Here is our Clubbie with our Yakima RocketBox.

It is a little long but it needs to be to fit my gf's sons skis, he runs on 191's or 179 twin tips. We have gotten 7 pairs of skis and 3 snow boards in the box at one time along with some stuff like pillows and cloths.

The pictures show the rack just sitting on the cross bars as i will need to get some hole plugs and drill some extra holes for the clamp bolts to go thru to get it to fit. And yes it does just leave a slight bit of room for a normal antenna. I'm thinking even a shorty would not let it go back any further.

Schatzy, I have the Yakima Rocket Box as well (sans cool stickers), did you get a feel for whether the clamp bolts are far enough apart/deep enough to accomodate the dimensions front to back and/or top to bottom of the cross bar?

The actual space between the inside edges of the cross bars is 27-1/4" and center to center is 29-1/2".

With these dimensions the rocket box will not fit with out some modification. the minimum distance between the current sets of mounting plate holes is 29-3/4" on mine.

What I plan to do is to drill some extra holes for the mounting plates and make it work. it will be tight but it will work. The difference between your box and mine could be the mounting plate style. Mine is over 6 years old and I have seen a newer one that had a different type of mounting plate. When I get home this evening I will put up a picture of the mounting plates. Hopefully on Friday I will be able to get to modifying the box.

I do Tuckermans every year, been doing it for 14 years. I'm slapping winter tires on mine in December, it should do just fine being so light. I'd actually prefer to put some 185/55/16's on the OEM 16" rims, but not sure I can go that narrow.

Thanks for the post on Rocket Box and the lesson 101 on the OEM rack install.

That Black Thule Atlantis 1600 looks great. I have the factory roof rails (not roof rack) and the factory cross bars. Does anyone have pictures of this setup? What additional parts are needed to mount the Thule box to the factory cross bars? I've just started researching this and it doesn't seem Thule's compatibility guide is current. I believe I need a fit kit and locks. I see EMS has the box for ~$420 now.
