I notice they seem to hover around the passenger side mirror and peck at the glass (reflections). never had this problem before, and now I get to clean the Poop off the side of the car and windows. I wonder if the shape distorts the reflection enough to make the bird think the reflection is of a bird in heat.

nesting season, its the male birds are defending the territory. They see the image of another male bird and attempt to drive it away from the nesting area

We have this problem with a Cardinal who has decided my wife's Lexus is his preening area. We stopped the behavior by putting some cheap ankle socks over the mirrors... just have to remember to remove them before driving. I did see him on top of her sunroof last week, but don't see that he has gotten it nearly as filthy as he does the side mirrors and doors.

The Clubman's mirrors are too bulky for socks (maybe Yeti socks?), so I cut the legs off an old pair of pajamas, and only need to hem them so they'll last more than a few months. MINI only gets parked outside occasionally, but that bird takes any opportunity to mess up my paint.

We had the same problem. Anytime I left CJ outside in our driveway, I had a particular robin who would sit on the mirror and peck the glass over and over. He pooped all over the side and front of my car. So, we made a quick change to storage in the garage, and Casey now is safe from inconsiderate birds.
