Really sad
I'm sorry to hear your dog is not with us anymore. I had a dog named Midgi for 17 years and she died of just plain "old age" I promosed I would never have another dog because I did not think any other dog could replace her. I was sad and devistated.
Along comes my neighbors adopting a corgi from Corgi rescue in Tampa. They brought him home and he found my dog door. He came into my house every day and they had to come get him and carry him home when they wanted to see him. To make a long story short he adopted me and when my neighbors moved they gave me the dog.
I love him as much as I did Midgi. They all have different personalties and I still think of Midgi at times but Mario has filled my life with joy.
I'm hoping you will get another dog soon. It won't make you forget about your old buddy but it will fill a void in your life that you know is missing.
It is really to bad a dogs lifespan does not match ours.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I still have to find the courage to pack up his beds, toys, and clothes. I've washed his food bowls and am getting prepared to give away the rest of his treats and doggie poop bags to the neighbours (I haven't told them yet).
Overall, the house is very quiet without him... keep expecting to hear the pitter patter of his nails on the floor coming to greet me. I guess he will be with me in spirit.
I've been thinking whether or not to get another dog... but I know I can never replace him. You're right it's too bad they don't have longer lives to match ours. I'm not sure I want to go through losing another one.

Why Dogs Don't Live As Long As We Do
Dogs don't live as long as we do so that we can experience the complete, uncompromising love of a dog as many times as we can fit into our own short lives.
Don't look at it as "replacing" your last dog, look at it as "adding" new loving memories to the ones from your last dog.
Your old dog will love you even more for giving a good home to a new dog.

MINI Diva, I am so sorry for your loss. I've been out of commission for a few weeks--very busy with work and lost track of this thread. When I read your earlier post, my heart sank all over again. You described some of what I felt when we lost Ted. The hurt you describe is familiar and I don't envy you. In fact, I just hurt for you. I know the loss and I know the despair and I know 'comforting' words are hard to come by. So I won't even try.
But I can relate to some of the encouragement others have offered. They did the same for me and it was touching. And for me...their wisdom was right.

Dear MINI Diva, not having been on NAM for a while I'm a bit late in offering my sympathies upon your loss. Anyone who has ever loved a dog and had their dog's unsparing, unadulterated pure love returned knows how you feel.
Clubman Freak's "Don't look at it as "replacing" your last dog, look at it as "adding" new loving memories to the ones from your last dog." is so, so true. And though I've posted this before, here is Eugene O'Neill's dog's wishes as to what his owners were to do upon his passing: "The Last Will and Testament of Silverdene Emblem O'Neill" http://www.eoneill.com/texts/blemie/contents.htm I hope it will help you through to the other side.

I unfortunately know all too well what you're going through. I lost my (almost) 12-year-old Sheltie KC just a week and a half ago.
I miss him so much... We traveled all over the country together, and he loved every minute of it. It's really sad to lose your best friend. Dogs become your family, no doubt about it.
I'm sorry for your loss.

another dog
We had three dogs all very close in age and recently lost two. Roxy was 15 last fall when we had to make the choice for her while Scarlet was just a little shy of 15 when the same happened over the summer. Scarlet was a Borzoi so 15 was a nice age, but still really hard to let go especially as it was a painful back injury and not any old-age related illness that took her down.
I have had dogs all my life, and I can tell you that it really helps to get another dog soon. Grief won't help you much or change anything. Adopting a new dog won't alter the previous dog's place in your heart either.
We adopted a young dog from a shelter, he's a great distraction and our remaining elderly dog is enjoying his spry new playmate too. No dog will ever replace the one who's passed, but having another dog will really help you feel better about the world in general.
Best wishes to everyone,
Chris
BTW- I have settled on the Poochstyles mat. There is a new design for the clubman that will work with the back seats up or down, and also with one in each position. I can't wait to get it! The hideous 1970's orange flowered bedspread I'm using at the moment is just too embarrassing to photograph!

Thanks to everyone for your kind words... I have tears in my eyes again after reading Otra's link... but I have accepted my loss this past month. I have his ashes with me in a really nice photoframe urn... as well as his paw print embedded in clay mounted inside the frame... and his leash hanging off the frame so the dog tags are visible. I still say hi when I come in the door and goodnight to him before I go to bed.
Anyway, keep the pics coming! I'll check here often. Thanks again for all your comments.

MINI Diva, I'm glad that the link I posted was worth while for you. Hang in there.
sgtjosh as a long time Shetland Sheepdog owner, I salute KC - and pointydog, aka Chris, I am very sorry to read of the losses you've experienced with your two, as well. It is never an easy road, but the love we share with our dog friends is worth it all.
