Launching from stand still

I find when going from a stop to a roll, the car takes a second or so before I feel the 'wow, my back is being thrown back into the seat feeling', almost like a lag for a moment. Am I just not starting/launching properly? Is that something having to do with the turbo or something? This is my first turbo, and the first time i've felt this in a manual

Thanks
jeff

yep, that's the turbo lag... it kicks in right around 2500-3000 rpm, right? It jolts the car and wants to jump forward ?

Yup, kinda annoying not being able to launch right away. Is there a way (via mod, or just technique) to overcome this? It's great when it DOES launch, but it takes about a second or so sometimes before It does, LOL

Is this something a new pully would help with, and if so - would it void my warranty?

what i do in normal driving (if i don't want the surge) is to take off smooth at around 1500 rpm, then just do a smooth accel until i hit 3000rpm, then upshift... that tends to work for me.

It's in the mechanics of the turbo system, try to read up a little bit more about how it works. Once u fully understand it, then you can adapt to it and just learn around it. Believe me, it's a good system to have (turbo). I had the R53 sc before and i like the R56 turbo setup much better

Thanks, I don't care to launch and go crazy each time - just it's nice sometimes when i'm at an onramp next to a granny car or yardwork truck or something, LOL.

Loving the car so far, not complaining - just learning :-P

If yer trying to launch with a quickness, it'll be a bit hard without chriping the tires. Get the revs up a bit more and slip the clutch to put some resistance on the motor causing it to boost, and it'll happen nice and quick for ya. It's ridiculous in my JCW cause it has so much torque, especially with the "Sport" on. It has NO power off idle, but at 1500, it starts to jolt, then peaks up around 2000... I've had several turbo cars, but never with so much torque so quick that the turbo spins up so fast, the car still accelerates when letting OFF the gas, lol.

LOL nice, thanks

Would a new pulley help at all with this?

And MORE important, will it void the warranty?

LOL, I don't drive WITHOUT the sport button on now, it's a whole new clutch with it on or off, and i'm not used to it at ALL with it off now. Sports Button/DSC Off FTW :-D

Like LiLReD1 says, get the RPM's up to around 2500 by dropping into a lower gear. Since the turbo boost is RPM dependent this is going to have the best result. I don't find that the sport mode helps the turbo kick in sooner at all. The throttle is by 'throttle by wire' which means that the only thing the sport mode is doing is changing the rate at which the throttle opens with respect to pedal movement. I'm not sure if it changes the full throttle amount or not, my car's too new to push it that hard.

You have a new '09 Clubman S right. The turbo is exhaust gas driven, not belt driven.

It's my understanding that the "Sport" mode is also the "overboost" everyone talks about with the extra jolt of trq.

I think yer right, I haven't decided whether it gives more power, or gives a more aggressive throttle ratio. I do seem to hear more of an intake howl and exhaust note with the Sport mode on, but again... I dunno if that's cause the throttle position has changed or not. Kind of a pain slow off the line cause it's just wantin' to BOOST... NOW. Gotta love my JCW.

I'm just revving up the RPMs a bit before I launch, starting to get the hang of it :-P
