Shift ****

08 Clubman Shifter question.
I was getting kinda agressive going thru the gears comparing with/without the sport button and something happened, yea besides enjoying the acceleration... three times while pulling hard into second gear the shift lever felt like it completely pulled out of whatever its connected to below it.
I pushed it back in quickly so not miss the right timing for 3rd gear.
Everything seems ok. I experimented and in any other gear the lever won't come out, but it will if in 2nd gear (if you pull upward hard).
Has anyone else experienced this?

The shift **** is snap fit, so if you pull hard enough it will come off the linkage. Putting it in second gear seems to give the best leverage to do this.

Was it the ****, or the lever? The **** has a nylon sleeve with flanges that fit into a groove on the ****.

Here are some photos from my web page.

The lever seems to be press-fit into whatever holds it below. A few people have pulled the lever out while trying to pull the **** off. They reported that pushing it back down seemed to work. Perhaps the press fitting at the factory is not as consistent as one would like. Or, the size of the shaft varies a little. If yours is coming loose, you could talk to your dealer about it.

When I took deliver of my MCS Coupe, I asked about removing the **** so I could put a wooden **** on it. He braced himself and pulled up very hard with both hands and the **** came off. The force he used makes me think my shift lever is very tightly secured.

I'm not sure if the **** or shaft came out. I think the shaft. I will test tomorrow morning to confirm.

OK now I learned this from my wife......
Robin you are right I am wrong... Wheww that was still tough to say.....
It was the shift **** coming off not the shaft.
Unfortunatly I broke the plastic ring around the boot investigating.
Anyone have one they want to sell?
Is there a way to snug the Shift **** or do I just take it easy and drive like I expect my kids to drive?

I think you need a good aftermarket shift ****. CravenSpeed is selling my African Blackwood shift *****. Doug Whalen makes some great stainless steel *****.

As for boot parts, get the number from RealOEM.com and order parts from Pelican Parts, ECS Tuning, or one of the NAM vendors who handles OEM parts.

For installation instructions, I have a web page for installing a ****, and another for replacing the boot with one of Redline's Italian leather boots.

Can't seem to find Part Number for just the ring. Found one for Boot and rings. tossing around the thought of Chrome maybe. would it be OK to have factory plastic Gray and the Shift ring Chrome? or would that look stupid?

I haven't ordered the part you want, so I'm not sure about it. You can call the guys at ECS Tuning. I couldn't find a part for the X9331 connector and they sorted it out for me. 800.924.5172

I think it would look odd to have only the shift boot ring in chrome, but nothing else.

I glued the broken tabs and it look like it will hold but I think I will look into a kit for chrome rings all around.
Robin, I read you links on replacing the boot, but was not sure if the directions were sayin to mount the boot ring "Before" putting the Console in place or after the console was secured in place.

And I just bought some black Plasti Dip to black-out all mine.

It has been awhile since I did it, but I think I installed the ring and boot before replacing the console. That way I could make sure it snapped in properly. I could be mistaken. It might be possible to do it either way.

Does anyone know how much a new shift boot will cost? I have a 2007 MCS and I was shifting the other day and I guess some how it came loose but in the process of trying to put it back I broke the clips that hold the leather to the plastic ring. Thanks in advance for any help.

You are in the R55 Clubman forum. I think you are looking for the R56 Forum.

I take it your 2007 MCS is an R56 body?

It ok , I can show you the parts: there was only some options with the boot separate. Otherwise, you have to buy the boot with the **** connected.

Thanks
