RPM in 6th at 70mph

Hi All,

I just got a 2010 Clubman S (rallye edition!) with a manual transmission.

Question for you all:
What RPM are you spinning at 70 when in 6th? My car is at 3k rpm, seems a bit high...

The loaner I just got (car is out of alignment) is an auto ClubieS, it's at 2-2.5k

Could my clutch be slipping? Is it the JCW Aero Kit that's causing a bit more wind resistance?

Preciate your response

Cheers,
Daniel

The auto has higher gearing than the manual. When I get a loaner, I'm usually around 80 mph at 3k. My manual shows about 76 mph at 3k rpm. I also have non-standard sized tires, so I'm probably going 73-74 mph.

With my winter tire (195/55/16) at 2950-3050 as read on my ODBII tool (tach reads 3k) I am at 73mph on the speedo which is 70MPH on my GPS

With my summer tires (205/45/17) on last summer at 2950-3050 (tach reads 3k)as read on my ODBII tool I was running at a hair over 70 on the speedo which was 68 MPH on my GPS.

So no your clutch is not slipping. This is normal.

At 70mph, RPM is at or near 3k.

So while we are here talking about MPH and GPS etc...I assume the speedo reads a tad bit faster than the gps and the gps is more or less accurate than the speedo? I thought the speedo ran a bit faster than what the speed actually is no? I have 15 inch all season tires.

You will find if you run a ODBII tool that the readout on the tool is not the same as ton the speedo. The speedo is set slightly fast for teh OEM tires that are put on the car. This is due to European Union Laws.

In my case the ODBII and the GPS are the same and the Speedo runs fast by about 3MPH from 30 on up. Below 30 it reads with in 1MPH.

There are a number of threads here on NAM about this that go into much more detailed explanations of the laws and why this is done. Just search for "speedometer accuracy".

BTW just to let you know on a standard set of 17" tires from brand new to fully worn there will be a approximately a 1.4% change in the speed of your car. For 15" tires I believe it calculates out to about 1.15%-1.2% difference.

Interesting thanks! I'll do a search and read more...

I FINALLY got to take my MINI on a trip today and do some highway speeds and I am also at just under 3k at 70mhp on my justa for the record.

I actually think that 3k at 70 mph is not very high for a 1.6 liter engine.

On a manual MINI, 4th, 5th, and 6th gears are all overdrive, which is one of the reasons why it gets such good gas mileage!
