I'm at 11 months and 13,300 miles. I called the dealer and the service advisor (former MINI Motoring Advisor) told me that the 1st service is supposed to be done at 1 year or 20K miles , whichever comes first and that I could bring in the car within a month of my 1 year anniversary (Sept 5) but NOT sooner than that date. The car is telling me that I still have a few thousand miles (5000 maybe?) to go until the service. Wow, completely different maintenance schedule than 1st-gen MINIs .
So, I am going to make an appointment for later this month .

Yep,one year is right
Even if you only have fifty miles on your car it will be serviced in one year. Call your dealer for the appointment and get it done.
If anything else needs servicing the computer will let you know. My service light came on at 14,000 miles and the dealer serviced it again. This time they changed all of the filters and drained and replaced my brake fluid.
First one was 1 year OCT.2010 =inspection & oil / filter / wiper blades
second @ 14,000= oil/filters(all of them) change brake fluid & full inspection.
The mechanic went over every inch of my car and I really don't know if he found anything that needed attention but if he did I'm sure it was taken care of.
I guess the computer will tell me when to take it in again. Even though, I will change the oil/filter myself at 20,000 miles when I rotate my tires and clean the inside of my wheels.
I'm very lucky that I have a good dealer and they do a very good inspection and service when needed.
