Is your new Clubman killing you?

Toxic new car smell? Top 10 "worst" cars for chemicals

Who doesn't love "new car smell?" A new study shows you may want to think twice before you breathe in that factory-fresh air. According to the study by nonprofit Ecology Center and HealthyStuff.org, what you might actually be sniffing are toxic fumes from chemicals used to create the car's interior.
Researchers at the Ecology Center tested more than 200 of the most popular 2011-2012 cars, and gave the cars a score based on levels of chemicals found in the interior, such as bromine and chlorine. The researchers said the car with the healthiest interior was the 2012 Honda Civic, which they gave a score of 0.46, saying it did not have any bromine-based flame retardants (which are used to make plastics less flammable), and used PVC-free fabrics on upholstery.
Which 10 cars scored worst? Keep clicking to find out...

Ahh... the stink of new and clean.
What's the units of the "score"? PPM? PPB?
Where is the scale on what's consider hazardous?

Hey, bubble-kids, roll down your window from time to time...

I had similar questions as bluefox280. What are these quantities, and what's considered hazardous? And they're hazardous when...spoon-fed to lab rats? When using bromine-treated sun-loungers for 6 hours a day over 6 months?

If bromine-whatever is a flame retardant, does that mean the "top ten" will incinerate quickly compared to the "bottom ten"? If that's the case, then the contrarian headline, "Top Honda model lacks fire resistance" might be used.

It is puzzling why the Clubbie was singled out, or is it? It has more "interior" surface than a Hardtop, but less than a CM, right? Odd.

Well, this should at least scare away the easily suckered from MINI ownership and I won't have to deal with them on the forums, at events, etc.

I also found it odd that the Clubbie was singled out. Surely that extra nine inches of "stuff" doesnt tip the scale.

You gotta love people who contribute nothing to a thread but throwing politics in something completely irrelevant.

When I took my mom to the dealer last year to pick up her X5d my SA told my mom something about the dealer had to detail the car and let the interior breathe. I told him that the new car smell is great and to leave it alone, but he said he had to. Maybe he was talking about this?

When I was a kid, my dad was into English sports cars. I remeber the smell of the brand new leather seats. You could smell it from 10 feet away from the roadsters. Then I buy my first new English car & YUCK... I hate new car smell. I was so glad when it finally went away.
