Mini Clubman 2010 replacement of ignition coils....is it going to work?

My car is in the shop...under warranty (thank God)....it is a 2010 Clubman with about 48k miles on it. For about 6 months it has been very hesitant when I accelerate. Especially noticeable around the 2000 rpm mark. I toook it in and finally it did it in front of the mechanic so I am not crazy. The service representative was really helpful. Found me a loaner vehicle....Just got a call from her saying that they are replacing two ignition coils.....
3 questions....
Has anybody ever had this saem or similar problem and did replacing the ignition coils work?
What are ignition coils?
How do they work?
Thanks.....supposed to pick her up tomorrow so I wanted to be a little informed about the possible outcomes or potential pitfalls.
Thanks,
DJCoop

I believe they are the spark plug wires. I had the similar problem with my Audi A4, not sure why it happens, could be bad crappy parts.
