Engine Malfunction light, Yikes !!!

Good evening guys, I own a 2009 Mini Clubman S , silver with black racing strips, only 25k miles on the car. I have only been on this site once before so please forgive me as I do not know exactly where to post my question. That said, here goes...I started he car this am (vey cold temps in NJ, single digits) Immediately the engine malfunction light went on in Yellow. The car only runs at 5 miles per hr. Has anyone experienced this problem? What might it be and where else on this site should I post this questions. THANKS

Have the code read would be the 1st thing to do. Chances are it was due to weather.
After it got to operating temperature did it run normal? There could be ice forming within the intake causing the CEL.

Yeah, what Braminator said. It could be due to any of ten gazillion reasons, but it probably is cold related. Did it stay on? My experience is that in a Mini they go on only while there's an issue, then shut off right away.

Thanks for the comments. It's still very cold here in NJ. I will restart the car later today when the temps climb a bit into the 20's. Hopefully, you are correct and the engine light will go off.

The engine light is often triggered by the exhaust O2 being out of spec. With it being so cold It probably took a bit of time for the EMU to bring things back into line after start-up. I've had it with mine but only for a few seconds - the temps are much warmer here.

I had this problem last week in my 2008. I took off the gas cap and filled the car and replaced the cap......the light went off and has not come back. Systems read caps that have not been put on securely.

OK internet diag guys.... simmer down ... there are over 300 codes available in the system. one CEL coming on does not mean its GOTTA be because of XYZ... he needs to get the code read and POSSIBLY diagnosed. the OBDII code does not always mean that sensor throwing the code is the fault... an o2 sensor might have a wire harness chewed, or maybe some moisture made it into the harness...

Sorry for the, delay in my reply. Been outta town traveling for work. After 2 very cold days, I did restart the MINI on day 3 (temps in 20's) and surprise no engine light on. I did drive the 09 mini, automatic. No probs. went to local dealership and shared my story. They wanted to charge me $140 to do a simple computer diagnostic but in the same breadth had mentioned that they had received many calls in the past 24 hrs from others complainng about the exact same issue. I'm probably going to keep an eye on this and see what happens.

Thanks again to all !

Pete2,

My '09 Clubman S acted similar... it turned out to be the High Pressure fuel pump. Have you had your's replaced? The replacement is on the recall list and mini will pay for it.
