Speaker Question

Crutchfield shows that these will replace the front speakers in my 2013 Clubman S.

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_065PRO5...-Pro50-SE.html

If I buy them, and take them to a local audio shop, how much would it cost to have someone install?

And would doing just this make much of a difference in sound quality? I have base radio.

Those speakers might be great if you're adding an amp, but our headunits don't put out much power, and the sensitivity of these is only 90 dB - so you would never hear much of their potential. I'd look for more sensitive speakers. Take a look at Focals - I think they have a set in this size at 94 dB.

Whatever you get, installation would cost something like $75 - $100 at your local Best Buy, even if you bought your speakers elsewhere.

Can I trust Best Buy to help me pick right speakers too? I'm completely lost on which speakers will work best.

Yes, those are the Focals I remembered seeing -- very efficient at 94 dB -- but does Crutchfield say they will fit? I'm guessing they would sound great (if they fit) Focals are just too expensive for me -- I got the Polk Audio db6501 components that I mentioned in an earlier post (92 dB) -- very clear sound, and much cheaper at Amazon than Crutchfield. If you don't replace the rears, you will still have some muddy sound from back there, but replacing the fronts alone will give you a noticeable improvement. I replaced my fronts and then replaced the rears a couple of weeks later. (If you replace the rears, you may want to do the channel swap because otherwise the bigger rears receive will very little bass signal, regardless of the quality of the speakers -- but we already discussed that.)

No, I would definitely not trust some random salesman at Best Buy to suggest speakers, although their techs are perfectly capable of installing them. Look through the reviews at both Crutchfield and Amazon, looking especially at the efficiency ratings if you don't plan add an amp. If you can afford it, look at the Integral Audio system that is much praised around here.

I think it's illegal in many jurisdictions to drive wearing headphones. I wouldn't do it, unless it was just one ear only to answer a phone call, they just block out too much noise, like emergency vehicles and horns from other vehicles.

Wearing headphones while driving?? Why do I see so many people doing this? It's dangerous, especially with ones like these that do a great job at blocking out external sounds.

You see them doing it because they have a death wish and are hopping it comes true.
Fitting various speakers can be done with 6mm MDF and foam to make the air seal. Don't need some joker to make you $100 poorer for that!
