'08 Turbo failure collateral damage? HELP!

1 week before warranty expired on my wife's 2008 Clubman S the turbo failed. We brought the car in to the dealership and they replaced the turbo under warranty. Great! about 4 weeks later the car started feeling like it was down on power, although no dash light indicators of anything wrong. I told her not to wait and take it in for service as it could be related to the repair. We got a call from the dealership that there was a major problem with the vehicle with no compression in cylinder 1 and possible piston damage.
We were not having the clearest phone communication with the dealer so I decided to go take a look at the motor which the dealership was fine with. Head now removed, what I saw was number 1 spark plug insulator and electrode broken off, one intake valve #1 cylinder with about 1/3 of the valve broken off.
The dealer never indicated the nature of the failure verbally or in the paperwork but I felt this could be directly related to the turbo failure. I know it wasn't a seal because we never saw any trace of oil or smoke or vapor. No coolant in the oil. No overheat code history ever, according to the service dept. However, after asking the service rep to look thru the code history I happened to notice a turbo control failure code. Is this related to the engine damage that they are now asking us to pay $5400 to repair? Can anyone shed some light on this for us?
