How long did it take him to make that determination? I treat mechanics like I treat doctors: Always get a second or third opinion. Time allowing of course.

A failed thermostat very well could cause a no start. Especially if they had the codes to back up the diagnosis I wouldn't doubt the fault.

Otherwise iced throttle body, carbon buildup, or HPFP.

Thermostat repair being the cheapest of the fixes I wouldn't drive them to chase more expensive components if they don't need to.

Intake gaskets?

Did the do a carbon blast? What reason did they give you to warrant replacing intake gaskets without doing a carbon blast?

They also replaced a coil pack.

Carbon blasted also for the intake gasket. Or maybe they removed the intake to get to the water pipe better.

Both fit N14 engine, but there was a split year. Look below for the split on 2009 production. Then 13537591623 fits some of N14 ( end half ) and then fits some N18.

13537528351 up to 5/2009

13537591623 from 5/2009+

What freezes up on the throttle body, condensation? Will the HPFP cause hard start with no codes?

Suffered for 5-1/2 years with an early '07 S that spent 5-1/2 months in the shop for issues related to cold start problems.

Last straw was oil being blown into engine harness from faulty (updated) breather bits. This was at 97,000 miles, traded it off for a '13 Clubman off dealer lot.

Condensation freezes in air volume metering unit, basically what's called throttle body in this engine. HPFP will die if run even close to empty so try not to do that but I'd think if it's showing fault it'd leave an error code behind as evidence.

Same with Oxygen sensors.

Moisture / oil mix ( most water the oil of course ) that collects from the PCV system around the butterfly valve on the throttle body connection.

Shoot, if coil packs are the biggest worry you have you're doing good!

Yeah, that's right up there with spark plugs are worn, replace the car. It only has 4 coil packs, and they are only $35 each and take about 30 seconds each to replace. The very least of your worries on an MCCS.

No joke! I had a thermostat failure 1/2 way home from picking up my R55. About a month ago I had a VANOS failure caused by a poorly installed (at the factory) end stop pin. It caused a no start issue.
Still love my car though; it brings constant smiles and much joy!
