should there be a filter?

2009 Clubman S
While replacing the battery I noticed what looks to be an air intake behind the battery. Does this intake supposed to have a filter of some sort?
thanks

It would be the cabin air filter. It is accessed from underneath the glove box though, so you might not be able to really see the element from up top. (especially if its dirty ect)

I guess I have to clarify my initial submission. I'm not talking about the
cabin air filter. I know about that one. I'm talking about opening on the fire wall behind the battery. You will probably need to remove the cowling over the battery to see it. The rubber "gromite" around the opening looks to have a slot molded into the rubber to retain a filter of some sort.
