My Turbo doesn't blow
I recently bought a 2009 Mini Cooper S Clubman with 136000 miles for my daughter to learn on and me to play with. I got it for $1500 because there were some issues with it. I fixed the first issue by replacing the thermostat housing and then replaced the right side cv axle, now another issue has popped up. I noticed one day that there was a loud clattering noise when I accelerated. I had a mechanic look at it and the diagnosis was the turbocharger needs to be replaced. I am fine with doing the work but my problem is buying the new turbo. In researching them I have found them ranging from $200 to $2000. At this point, I can't see spending more for a turbo than I did for the car but don't want to "cheap out" either. I am looking to stay around $500-$600, I would appreciate any suggestions?

The clattering noise might not be the turbo. Have you checked the timing chain and guides?
If the turbo doesn't blow at all, try checking the diverter valve and the hoses for cracks.
If you can do the work yourself maybe look at the Mamba turbos as not too pricey or maybe get your current turbo rebuilt if still in good condition.

I agree. Clattering does not sound like turbo. More like timing chain. Codes for turbo (diverter/blowoff valve, control solenoid, hoses) operation are available in the scanning system.
If the turbine wheels in your turbo are still good rebuilding the turbo is easy. I have two of them (OEM, not aftermarket) rebuilt sitting on my shelf for less than what you are finding. Was keeping one for a spare but if you really need one PM me.

Okay, you guys were correct, not the turbo. The timing chain ate the upper chain guide. Not real hard thanks to youtube videos Mini Adventure and 2Guys 2Minis in particular. A big pain with getting the hoses off but other than that just time and patience. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
