CV question

After going to town this morning, on the way home some strange vibration started. Seems to be the driver side, but I pulled both wheels. No broken CV boots, but on the driver side axle, when I reach over the brake disc & grab the axle I can move it up and down a little. With it all in place I can't really tell if it's the CV joint or the bearing in the case. Anyone been there all ready & know what's up??
Help!!!

Being I got no reply as of yet, lets ask an easier question, should there be any motion (left right, up down) at the inner end of the axle? I have a little!!

Well, guess I'll see if the new axle fixes it! Napa got me one in half a day, I took it out this morning & just got home with the new one. I'll put it in now and report back after a road test. Looks like getting the oil back in is the hardest part of the job!!

do you mean fluid drained from the trans?
Auto or man?
Neither one should drain more that a teaspoon or so (if that)

There should no perceptible lateral motion on either end of the axle but lots of axial motion.

It's a standard & if you don't drain it you'll get about half the oil on the floor when you pull the axle. I know because when I put the new one in I missed the fact that it didn't seat right & upon refilling the oil about half of it came out the axle seal. I now have it in right and am waiting for new oil~
