That full duct helps direct cooler air into the intake system, so you definitely want it connected. That open intake box isn't doing you any favors.... The open box is just sucking in hot engine air.

unfortunately that's how I bought it 7 or so years ago. normally you can see where the manifold lines up with the box theres a metal ring that broke off that had a connection between the two that ive pulled out as im trying to sort out what to do to reweld that metal ring so i can reattach it and get at least lower temp air to that filter....

my thoughts are that the hot air isnt the worst thing, as the high performance filter is doing its job getting more air through (at least after I replace it with a clean one) and the engine runs well... Im not going to dump another 300+$ in parts to go back to a OEM setup so this is going to qualify under what's the best of the situation I have.

current plan is replace the filter, and Weld the metal ring back on so i can hose clamp the manifold back onto the filter box. anything I should think about here?

https://www.ddmworks.com/Mini-Cooper...rks_p_152.html is the filter setup

Definitely missing some pieces....I would just pull that whole cold air duct right out, and through on a shelf. It's not doing anything at this point anyway. Keep it handy in case you ever decide to retrofit a different intake.
