hahahaaha!! slag1911, you amuse me greatly. first off if the R56 is so bad what are you doing in the Coupe Talk (2007+) forum. must have made a wrong turn i guess. hahaha!! sorry i cant stop laughing. anyway i used to have a 2004 MCS (supercharged) and a 2005 MC and now a 2007 MCS (yes with the turbo!!). the 2007 is not only better, it fu&*ing blow away the other two MINIs. im a huge car guy, in the last 3 years i have had a (1994 altima, 2004 MCS, 2004 350Z, 2005 MC, 2002 audi TT, 2006 scion xB, and finally my 2007 MCS). the 2007 leaves all in the dust. again, i assume you made a wrong turn and ended up here by accident, if you actually were interested in the 2007 MCS, believe me. cost savings or not, it IS a better car period.

Headlights: This was done to help with the pedestrian safety requirements AND make the car cheaper to repair in accidents. I think the world will still go round if I can't lift my bonnet and light up the sky.
Side windows- no argument there
Turbo- cheaper yes, better for the driver with improved MPG and more available torque. Win win for MINI AND the consumer.
Anything else?

I'm not sure we've got this cost saving thing figured out...and may never. Most of this I speculate is hidden in the manufacturing process. For example, I would imagine going to the same manual tranny for MC and MCS would ultimately present a cost savings. As was said...some of what we assume to be cost saving feature may not be...some were introduced for other reasons or even to produce a benefit.

Agreed.
The anything else bit was tongue in cheek

I like the supercharged 06 that I have, and I hate the interior on the 07. The console looks like something out of the comic books. I have driven turbos and do like them. I keep hearing that they have fixed the turbo lag, but if you know anything about driving or feeling how the car reacts, you will know that the lag is still there. That's my 2 cents.

Exactly...
It's not worth the time anymore even responding to a few of these people. Some noob posts 99% of the time in the R56 section of the forums constantly slamming a car he doesn't own and has no itention of ever purchasing? There's a point where it seems like someone is just trying to justify their purchase to themselves and rationalize their car payment check by bashing the new and different product.
There are several threads in the Faults and Fixes section where a select few R53 ownerns have piped in with "should have bought an R53" or "shouldn't have bought a first model year car". Again, again... and again. These are in threads where people are simply asking for help or imput from other owners. I wonder what kind of reception I would get if I went over to the R53 forums and started prowling around there. Everywhere I saw an opportunity I could point out "too bad you didn't go for the R56, they solved that issue with the new model" or somthing to that effect. In the faults and fixes I could lend my out-of-context 2-cents at every turn. Oh, no. Wait a minute, I have some class and would never dream of doing such a thing.
My favorite was the owner who wrote "I saw the aero kit on a jcw when i was at a car show a few months before the release and personally i found and STILL find the kit & new r56 ugly, too bulky and IMOH theyve robbed the mini of its MINI-ness". If it's a thread where someone is ASKING for an opinion or design critique, that's one thing ("R53 vs. R56... a visual study"). This was in a thread where several owners were talking about the JCW aero kit, about how much they are enjoying their cars, sharing pictures and generally complimenting each other on the changes that they've made and like as owners. What would posess someone to interject like that? Show some freakin' class for gosh sakes.
Some people just need to get over it. Maybe spend a little more time in the forum that covers their car. Or better yet, go do a little MINI motoring as it appears you have a little too much time on your hands.

you know msh - it would be worthwhile to just edit that out and start a new thread with that statement and just leave a link here. Because you are right, and that is the pattern.
But maybe we could try to bring this discussion back to SC vs TC. Otherwise the mods might as well close it now.

If that's all you got out of what I wrote... you have missed the point.
