Thumping Noise After Parking

I was sitting in my car after parking at a Metro lot, engine off, while programming a destination in my navigation, when I heard an occassional low-volume thud/thump coming from the rear of the car. It was not offen nor consistent enough to have been fuel sloshing in the tank, which was nearly full. I got out a listened. Every once in a while, I would hear the clank of the exhaust system contracting as it cooled. So, my theory is, from inside the car, that clank translates into the thud/thump. Any ideas?

My guess would be the gas tank equalizing pressure. Romi does it also. Sounds like low level farts.

It's that spicey high octane fuel you get at the truck stops or somebody hiding in the boot.

My dachshund coundn't hide in the boot, let alone a person. Good thought, Skuzzy, as well as a "colorful" analogy.

Hey LynnEl, when did you change the name of your Mini?!? And is that legal?

Yeah, the analogy was the best I could come up with before having my second cup of coffee. I could have picked something from nature, like a distant elephant blowing his nose, but how many people have heard an elephant blow his nose? I figured everyone knows what a fart sounds like.

My car does the same. The exhaust clinks and pops, the heat shieldings crackle, the fuel tank bumps and thumps. It's all normal.

Ever see the opening scene to Goodfellas? (guy thumping away in the trunk of the car outside)

Some of that is as it cools stresses are relieved, hence the sound. I get the same thing in my house every night when it cools from daytime heating. I have one joint that will make one loud creak about 9 after the sun goes down in the summer.

Great one! Definently in my top 10 movies of all time. However, this screenshot isn't from the opening scene.

Isn't it while they have the guy in the trunk of the car, and they stop at Tommy's mother's house to get a large knife, and she wakes up and insists on all of them sitting down to eat while Billy Batts flails around in the trunk of the car? It's the opening sequence, isn't it?

(sorry for the OT...)

I changed it when I got the car. Fizzi just didn't feel right.

Yes, I saw the link to the thread in the general forum. I seldom venture there, so I missed it.

I've completed some drives where the adrenalin rush, increased heartbeat, beads of sweat, and intense focus has given me a slight headache. I don't even realize I've been holding my breath for that last several miles.

Chili is not condusive to low level noise.

And the screen shot is later in the movie....methinks.

Depends on the chili and one's sphincter control. Or is that TMI?

All these explanations....well most of them...seems plausible. Another possibility, do you have Trunk Monkey? Maybe the "system" is being armed.

You know, if I remember right, the thumping noises usually occur while parking.

At least in cars with bigger back seats?

My money is on heat disapation.

I get that in my 06 as well. Pretty sure its just cooling down. On another noise related subject, I was out with my daughter tonight motoring around. I have gotten so used to the usual MINI sounds I pretty much know exactly whats what at any given time. All of a sudden she turns down the stereo(imagine a 13 year old turning DOWN the volume ) and listens for a minute then says "do you hear that?" I say "What?" she says "THAT" I say "no, what does it sound like" and she says "a ticking noise" and I say "oh, its just a rock in the tire tread" she says "are you sure? how do you know?" and I say "I know my MINI". Sure enough we get home and check the rear passenger tire, and there it was, a rock stuck in the tread. It was proud moment for me indeed!! The fact I have my daughter listening to STEWIE is awesome!!
