R56 First Oil Change
#76
If the oil service light normally comes up around 10k miles, but you change the oil yourself at 5k. Would it still comes on at 10k? Or would the sensor figured out you got new oil and push it back to 15k?
And if light doesn't come on at 10k, could you still take it to the dealer for free oil change?

I think you get a free oil change if it's been one year since your last one, regardless of how many miles you've accumulated.

The car calculates the 'miles until service' based on gas utilization. If you track the car hard and get a low MPG, it may indicate that you may need service before the first 10,000 miles. If you drive it very gently and get higher MPG, you may not need service for 15k+ miles. It does not detect that you replaced the oil yourself by sampling the oil. If you reset the service indicator (it can be done... search NAM) while still in the free maintenance period, you could cheat yourself out of a free oil change and service at the dealership.
I changed my oil after 2,000 or so and again every 5,000 miles. I drive my car fairly hard and do the occasional DE or Auto-X, so I think that it's worth it.

On my 03 MINI I followed the onboard computer countdown as to when oil change was needed. First oil change at 10,000 miles. Second change at 25,000. I sold my car with 65,000 miles and never had any engine problems. Earlier oil changes than recommended offer peace of mind to those used to changing oil more frequently on other cars but I feel comfortable letting the car tell me when it"s time.
How about topping of fluid like brake, coolant, aircon filter, wiper blades etc?s it part of free maintenance schedule??
