I have it, but I'm not sure I should have. How big a target are MINIs for car thieves? You have to carry another fob and if you don't have it, they will think your car was stolen.

Where are you getting that price. Lojack cost $700 at full retail

Robin ... for MINI theft stats see https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ght=theft+rate

I don't think you have to get it from the dealer. It's a separate company. $1300 is a lot to pay for theft insurance IMO. It's like the extended warranties they sell. You can buy them yourself for way cheaper. They wanted $700 for a tire warranty when I bought mine. I could have gotten a new set of performance tires with a warranty for less than that.

Just curious...

Has anyone ever heard of a recent MINI being stolen? If I'm to believe the sales pitch, it's supposed to be pretty hard to start one without the key fob. Does a thief need to crack the OBC?

IMO, absolutely not worth it. This is one of those obscene profit options that some dealers offer. They sell very few of them as a percent of cars delivered, but by pushing it to buyers they occasionally sell one and reap very high profits. Your comprehensive insurance covers theft, so you have coverage anyway. LOJACK would just enable a quicker recovery of the vehicle in the event it were stolen.

Yeah, I was offered the Lo-Jack through work for $375 installed. I passed as I don't live in a big auto-theft area (80% of stolen cars had unlocked doors and keys left in them!)... and with the chipped keys, it's pretty difficult to steal a car without the key that belongs with it. With the "flying saucer" on the '07... I would say impossible... but probably not worth the effort for most thieves. Get some good insurance, instead.

As someone else noted ... just call them up ... you dont need the dealership involved. They come to your house and install it.

Here's the most recent list of most stolen:
1.2001 BMW M series 2.1998 Acura Integra 3.2004 Mercury Marauder 4.1999 Acura Integra 5.1995 Acura Integra 6.2002 Audi S4 7.1996 Acura Integra 8.1997 Acura Integra 9.2001 Acura Integra 10.2000 Jaguar XJR 11.1994 Acura Integra 12.2005 Suzuki Aerio

And another list:
1.1991 Honda Accord 2.1995 Honda Civic 3.1989 Toyota Camry 4.1994 Dodge Caravan 5.1994 Nissan Sentra 6.1997 Ford F-150 7.1990 Acura Integra 8.1986 Toyota Pickup 9.1993 Saturn SL 10.2004 Dodge Ram

And here's where its happening:
1.Modesto, Calif. 2.Las Vegas/Paradise, Nev. 3.Stockton, Calif. 4.Phoenix/Mesa/Scottsdale, Ariz. 5.Visalia/Porterville, Calif. 6.Seattle/Tacoma/Bellevue, Wash. 7.Sacramento/Arden-Arcade/Roseville, Calif. 8.San Diego/Carlsbad/San Marcos, Calif. 9.Fresno, Calif. 10.Yakima, Wash.

If you don't have theft coverage, or you live in the above areas, the lojack might be worth it. Otherwise, be smart about where you park it.

I tracked down 2 lojack equiped vehicles this weekend. Lojack works, but you do have to be in the right place and it isnt exact. BTW onstar in GM vehicles is a waste of money if theft recovery is a consideration

I'd also add that it makes no difference if lack of a key fob makes it impossible to start. Thieves will just flatbed it, drop it at another location and start-a-strippin'

I swear I was quoted $600, or therabouts. $1300 sounds nuts.

My MA tried to convinced me that in my state the insurance reduction would earn back the value in something like 4 years. I didn't really believe it and didn't feel like laying out the money. Just something else to consider in making your own decision.

It is only worth it if your insurance company will give a significant enough discount to make it actually profitable to you, but this is not likely.

Otherwise you are paying extra money to help keep your insurance agent's profits higher.

When it comes to worrying about my MINI being stolen, I pay my insurance agent to stay up at night worrying about the safety of my MINI.

I really doubt the police department where I live would bother to go find it even if the have ther equipment for lojack. Plus, my Supra was stoeln in Boston. It was found 20 minutes later, stripped. Even if it had lojack, it wouldn't have mattered.

Exactly! The cars that get stolen with the keys in them (I'm ashamed to say that happened to me-I ran into a hospital, left the car in front, gone in 2 minutes, recovered in a week unharmed) want transportation, the rest are stripped. In AZ a lot of the stripped parts end up in Mexico. I doubt there is much of a market for Mini parts. BTW if anybody can get me a JCW aerokit in SS real cheap let me know, OK?

my mini came with it as a add on compliments from the dealer in new york,
i bought mine right when they came out and thankfully have never needed to use it but at least its their, now with around 170,000 miles if it was stolen the insurence wouldent give me squate so at least id be able to find it, and yes theyd flat bed it if they wanted it, i have the card in my wallet and its just a good peice of mind, oh and the dealer shouldent charge over 600 for it so call them back and tell them their nuts call around !!

most cars are stolen for used parts and the demand for used parts, the minis are small enoufe market that the demand is not their yet, if theirs no money in the theft and teardown of a car the only other reason is to joy ride or get out of town!!!

I was very fortunate and found my dream MINI under the sparkly lights on the show room floor. The LoJack was already installed, along with pretty much every other option.

I thought the price was ridiculous and asked that they take it out - it was a deal breaker (ya right, my baby was coming home with me regardless). They apparently didn't want to have to remove it, or the alarm, because they asked me if they reduced the price to $250 "as a package" would I take it?

Of course I would/did!
