MPG?

So according to your on-board computer, what are you getting for MPG. Just curious, because on my MCS it says 31 mpg. I do a pretty 50/50 mix of city/ highway, and I've got about 3500 miles on it.

My first tank (strictly city driving) I got 31; then a trip from Kaiserslautern to Stuttgart (all Autobahn) averaging 135 KPH (85 MPH) and got 34. Probably could have got 36 but was locked in a Stau (i.e. traffic jam) for about four hours and was re-routed through several towns that unboudtadly caused it to drink more fuel.

I have 1200+ on mine. I track my milage / fuel usage with a GREAT little program on my Smartphone called "Gaslog" (freeware!). I picked up my MINI with 1 mile on the OD, so all miles have been closely tracked. My OBC says I'm averageing 30.7 MPG, my Gaslog programs says I'm getting 30.8 MPG. That means to me, the OBC is VERY accurate on MPG.

I'm on Long Island, and use the car mainly to commute and some of that is in stop and go rush hour traffice.

I really respect a guy who does things like that the right way. No guessing. Just the facts Ma'am, just the facts. Thanks for sharing the results.

It's important to me because even though I acknowledge that the Mini is NOT an economy car, low fuel consumption is helping me justify buying my first Mini since selling my 1962.

I track it on my palm as well. I have 1100 miles on my MCSa and seems to be hitting around 28 MPG with 80% city driving....
The onboard computer has been off by as much as 1 MPG...

We're only getting 26MPG on our no matter how much freeway driving. We just came back from a 600 mile trip and the highest it got was 26.7 which is way way off the mileage people have been reporting here.

MCSa.

A couple of questions, driving on the hwy at 80+, using at least 91 octane or 92?

Seems a little low. I have been gettting a 30.5 avg. on the MINI computer, I have about 1400+ on my MCSa. Mostly local city, spirited mountain driving, short hops on I36, I25 into the city. One long drive last Sunday on I25 south then mountains back up to Colorado Springs, it got up to 31.2, now back to 30.5.

Have the dealer check the engine at your next stop, see if they find anything amiss.

2600 miles, I average each tank independently. The OBC was off by .1 MPG last tank at 32.9.
Mostly highway, 10-15 miles between small Burgs with the A/C on max.

29-31 with mostly city (~70%) driving

My OBC has been off by as much as 0.5 mpg (high). THat's not too bad IMO. I'm very happy with the mileage. I was getting 19-21 in the same driving conditiobs in my WRX.

I would think the OBC is plenty accurate enough. If it is "off", can you know it’s the OBC, and not the time of day you filled the car, the accuracy of the gas pump, whether you filled the tank to exactly the same level, and other variables that the OBC doesn't have to deal with? I'm sure it isn't 100% accurate, but I'd bet it's more accurate than most manual calculations. Also more consistent.

resmini,
The "inaccuracy" of manual calcs would be correct in the case of just checking 1 tank full. But when you track ALL the tank fillups, it averages out. So if I fillup up 3 times, with the tank at exactly the same level, and I put in 13 gals one time, then 12.5 next time, then 13.5 next time, the averate is 13 gallons each time, and the milage would be calculated based on all three added up, and the mileage all added up. So there ends up almost no error in it. And the longer you do it (the more tankfills and mileage), the more accurate the "manual calculation" gets.

Here is the link to the free Smartphone program (Gaslog) if anyone is interested: http://www.supware.net/GasLog/

The developer is now making a new version that is going to include some more cool stuff in it, like a maintenace log for oil changes.....

You all need to reset your MPG and MPH average values and start over. After 1000 miles report back both values. We will compare MPG/MPH number together. lower average speed will represent more city driving and higher mph will represent more highway driving. A higher MPG will be divided by a relatively higher MPH. At the end someone will figure out the average mpg/mph value and if your number is below the mean, your driving habit is wasteful(lead foot but more entertaining) and if you're above the mean that will mean your driiving habit is fuel saving.

I just came up with the formula, mpg/mph. But it doesn't hold true for all speeds because I know the engine is not as efficient at 100 mph as at 60 mph. However, for our purpose of comparing and for us reasonable people who travel at or below the freeway speed (80 mph) most of the time, it will work. What do you think?

With a bit over 4100 miles and having never reset the OBC I have:
45.2mph avg speed
41.6mpg avg fuel use
Manual records, which only cover 3300 miles, show:
39.6mpg avg fuel use
Conservative driving. 2007 MC w/6 speed manual.

I can't find a way to reset the MPG. I scrolled through the settings. I checked against manually filling it up and the miles covered though and still get under 28MPG.

Would it be a good idea to reset the OBC now that my car (and myself) is well beyond the break-in period to get a more accurate MPG? If so, how do I do that?

Nui, if you do not have a NAV system in your Mini, press the "Menu" button on the speedometer. Then press the button underneath "BC".

When the OBC display is up, press the button directly underneath the item you want to reset. If it can be reset, you will be shown the option to do so.

Also do not forget to reset the trip odometer.

I log the numbers for each gas tank in my travel log, plus manual calculations for MPG. My book shows ranges from 29.2MPG all the way to 42.6MPG. I have it all in a spreadsheet at home and cannot recall the overall average. But Romi has about 2,200 miles on her now.
