Do-It-Yourself Oil Change

I just got back from the dealer and have a question about oil changes. I may want to change oil a little more than my three year maintenance schedule will let me. I certainly don't want to fork over $100 a pop to the dealer after the maintenance schedule runs its course. The dealer made it sound like changing oil on the Cooper S is close to rocket science in complexity. I can't believe that this is the case. Besides, I kind of like doing the routine maintenance on my cars. I have done some searches on this site and haven't found a good step-by-step guide to changing oil yourself on the 2007 Cooper S. Can anyone direct me to a good thread or a step-by-step guide to doing the change? Thanks.

Hate to post a 'me too', but me too.

I don't have my MCS yet but did oil changes on my 330, and plan to do the same on my MCS. I have read the debates over how often & etc, but no one has great picture of where the drain plug is or access to the oil filter. I guess I might have to shell out the money to buy the Bentley's (or whatever) guide but dammit the internet is for FREE information right?

Also, here is an interesting post about Mobil 1 and BMW Castrol vs. store bought Castrol. I made the mistake of using Mobil 1 when I should have used Mobil 1 Extended Service.

The oil change is pretty easy. Use rubber gloves when removing the oil plug. Here is a description of my experience.

I bought this kit from Mini Mania. They were a little slow to ship, but for the price of two filters you also get two brass oil plug gaskets, and the socket for removing the oil filter. The filters are BMW OEM. Other vendors may also have this kit.

Thanks for the above. I almost can't wait to need to change the oil on a car I haven't driven, seen, and that likely isn't built yet.

The price of these filters is crazy. They cost twice as much as BMW filters.

Just to join with the previous posts - the oil change procedure is easy as can be - no reason not to do it yourself!

How much are the BMW filters? Is that from a dealer, or somewhere else?

Check out this place. TEN filters for less than $60, shipped with no tax outside of PA. These are OEM filters.

Which place? There was no link. However, 10 ten filters would last be about 50,000 miles which could be about five years.
