My understanding was that BMW did the lion share of the development work on the gas engine in exchange for the right to use Peugeot small diesel engines.

And I thought BMW was taking advantage of Peugeot's experience with small rally engines to design the Prince.

That would make sense since the article said diesel engines were involved. Didn't say anything about gas engines.

In terms of building the engine, the manufacturers build less and less themselves. For example, most French engine blocks are built by the Francaise de Mecaniques, a mid size private company in the north of France that specializes in engines CNC work.

This I think pertains mostly to engine development. Since the R56 engine is a completed design, manufacturing can continue. The two companies wont be getting together for any new designs though. This sounds exactly the same as the separation of Chrysler and BMW after the Tritec engine development.

BMW must be just as hardheaded to deal with on a corporate level as they are trying to deal with consumer issues.

So MINI continues anew with a redheaded stepchild of an engine. It'll be interesting what the 3rd gen ends up with.
