DSC or No DSC?

Quick question: For your standard car driver living in Michigan is Dynamic Stability Control on the Mini really helpful? I will be driving my 07 mini year round. Thanks for any help.

Get it. It's very useful, and almost impossible to add aftermarket.

If you want to do Auto-X, you can turn it off too.

Edit: Welcome to NAM, by the way.

Yes, that is a definite yes. Will be mandatory on all us sold cars around 2012.

May save your life. In ordinary driving, it may never kick in, but the one time it does may be worth everything....

I had the opportunity to try my '07MC (A/S tires) on icy highways this past weekend. There was a stretch where there were no others cars as far as I could see either ahead or behind me. So I experimented a little. I could tell the difference with DSC 'on' and 'off'. I also confirmed that DSC can be overwhelmed by the laws of physics. That said - I'm glad I got it.

BEST ever add on for snow and ice. DSC may someday be government mandated...it is that good. Of course it takes all the fun out of driving in the spirited mode. Thankfully it has the off switch.

If it were hill assist alone, it would be worth the price.

It was ranked as the third most popular "must have" option here on NAM:

Get it. If I had to do it again, I still would not order it but I recommend others to get it.

I've had it go off a couple of times on wet pavement--mildly. OTOH, it was inoperative on my husband's BMW about a year ago. We went on a drive with the local BMW club---big string of cars--and at one sharp corner, with very slow speeds, everyone went through without a problem. Except us--we slid sideways. No damage--got it under control pretty quickly, but it was a good lesson on how well it works. We were only going about 25 mph.

Consider the deductible on your insurance. One save pays off.

For year 'round use in snowy/icy climates, absolutely. Personally, for dry Southern California, I can't stand BMW's DSC, especially in a front-drive car, and am bummed that it will be forced on us in the next few years.

The DSC is like an idiot proof thing. Definitely never useful on dry pavement. Snow and ice there are small possible benefits, but its more of a tire thing then. Now the hill assist could be a good reason to get it, but personally I rather avoid adding things to my car that could break. It seems to be the source of some problems with the R56.

Why don't you just turn it off?

dsc probably fails at the same rate as abs, so should we get rid of abs? even on dry pavement on rare occasions when you lose traction at high speed, it can be helpful. true, on hot dry days in socal, i almost always make it a point to turn it off, and it can be turned off completely, not like the lexus ones that still kick in once it's *off.* it's probably one of the few new electronic gizmos that's really really worthwhile. i think the original poster got the point, he's gonna order dsc =P

Everyone should get the DSC without questions. The world will be a lot safer.

Could you explain, please? Such a blanket statement really needs to be backed up with facts.

Snow and ice there are small possible benefits, but its more of a tire thing then.
Why only small?

Now the hill assist could be a good reason to get it, but personally I rather avoid adding things to my car that could break.
You mean like a turbo, or a radio, or sunroof, or...

It seems to be the source of some problems with the R56.
What problems?

I'd rather not order and not pay for something that I don't want and isn't useful to me than have to consciously turn it off every time I start the car.

If you drive in snow DSC may be much more of a necessity. My first MINI did not have DSC and I never once missed it. My current MINI does have DSC and it has kicked on now and again, but for little reason. However, I do not find it intrusive, and I do like the hill-assist feature so I'm good w/ having it.

I've read here in the forums that you should turn DSC *off* in snow. I have no experience yet with MINIs (ordering soon) or DSC, so I have no idea. What do you all think?
