Dealership policy on aftermarket products

Hey everyone,

My dealership(P&W Mini in Pittsburgh) said they won't install any aftermarket parts for me unless it's jcw, they said it was some kind of policy. On my old Mini (03 cooper) they installed a Magnaflow catback for me 2 or 3 years ago. I was reading around on here( 2nd gen mini sections) some dealerships were giving installation price quotes to people about aftermarket(non-jcw) parts. Is it just my dealerships policy?

This is hardly a surprising position. If they do they installs, they have to back them up. It puts them in a position of warrantying 3rd party products, probably without authorization from Mini. That means Mini won't reimburse the dealer for warranty work related to the install of 3rd party parts. Some dealers may be willing to take that risk, others not.

I see, thanks for the input. I was just curious because they put on non-jcw mods for me before now they won't, as I stated. Thanks again

They may refuse to install 3rd party stuff, but it's against the law to void your warrantee for that stuff...they have to be able to prove the modification caused the damage/problem. Which is hard for them to prove, but be prepared to fight for it depending on your dealer. I don't have any Mini experiences with that, but Ford I do. Was a PITA but I won lol.

Yep. A hard argument for them to make towards bolt-on parts.

Not such a hard argument for an ECU. For an engine with a 1-year track history, I don't think I'd do it for an extra 10-15hp.

Exactly, it's not worth the hassle. If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't have put the bolt on stuff on in the first place on the Ford. Why create what could be extra problems.
...Unless it's something you can easily UNbolt before any trips to the dealer.
