I dont think thats how the system works...i think its a sensor that analyzes wheel spin, and if a significant change is detected, it trips the warning. I think.
I think you can. Maybe you need new stems for the seal, I don't know. I just put some tpms sensors in 15 in 06 cabrio wheels with snow tires. I bought the sensors from tirerack off ebay at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-M...spagenameZWDVW
I installed them myself before going to the tire place. It's not hard.
Yes, you can switch the sensors to new wheels regardless of whether or not you have run-flats or standard tires. Just make sure the mounting point for the sensor on the new wheels will accept it. Some (not many) wheels are not TPMS friendly and will in some cases angle your sensor wrong or not allow it to be used at all. HTH.
is there a fuse you can pull for the tmps? I have driven other cars for all of my life with out tire pressure systems and i have never had problems. Now in the cooper if you just slap on any wheel and tire combo you have a warning chime. There has to be a way to disable it for periods of time? right?
I doubt that BMW/MINI wanted to go to wheels sensors, but it was government mandated. You can thank the idiots who drive SUVs with under-inflated tires.
The pressure box might work, but it better hold pressure, or it will be more trouble than cure.
if you have the metal valve stems with the plastic cap then you have rds. and should keep the same wheels if you have a regular rubber valve stem then use what ever you want.
I successfully added tpms to my old rims. Worked fine. Cost $238 for the parts. $40 to dismount 4 runflats. $105.00 to remount 4 runflats. Total of $385.00.

Lots of third-party wheels will accommodate the TPMS sensors. You just have to make sure before ordering wheels.
my konig feathers were compatible.. just ask the tire place, they should know if the wheels you want are. If they are, just tell them you want the sensors swapped over.
this just in:
Went to the dealer ship today and they CHANGED the angle of the sensor to fit my specific rim requirement.
Ps the rims in question are first gen team dynamics 1.2 the rim most say wont work without modifying
How cool is that pm me for the full story
so what exactly does the TPMS and the wheel need to be compatible? or can i just get any wheel i like and the TPMS will just get stuck in there? does anyone have pictures of what the TPMS looks like also?
the direct tmps looks like an extension of the valve stem. I saw a picture on e-bay( it was listed as bmw tmps valve stem). According to the wheel guy at bmw 99% of all 4X100 16"/17"/18" will fit the direct tmps all it would need would be some minor adjustments. He told me that they have the ability to change the angle of the valve stem for individual after market rim requirements. He used the original sensor from my mini wheel.

Good I have the rubber ones. I was told recently that up here in Canada, all of the Minis have the system that operates with the ABS sensor and not the sensors inside the wheels. In the US it is a govt regulation, but in Canada it is not.

Does anyone know the answer to this question? I am curious myself.
Unfortunately no. the TPMS isnt a system that can be disabled. Some people have taken their sensors and placed them in a pvc pipe. They installed a valve stem to the capped pipe and inflated the pressure to 36 psi. Thne they kept the sealed tube in the trunk.....
