R56 If not a MINI...

I had to make this decision a couple years ago, when I had to sell my R53 for practical reasons. The car I bought is the complete opposite of the mini in many respects - and even though I like it a lot, I liked my mini more. As soon as I can get the kids down to a MINI dealer and into the back of a Clubman, I anticipate trading my current car, a 2005 Pontiac GTO, for it. A third of the power, twice the mileage seems to be a trade-off I willing to make at this point in my life. I figure we will save about $2500 just in gas each year.

My most serious option would be making lifestyle changes so that I did not have a car at all. I live close enough to a metro station that joining ZipCar and becoming more familiar with local transit would be my first choice. Mass transit would give me more time for reading than I'll ever get by being a car, and I see the world differently than I did a few years ago.
We have an MCS now, If getting a another car, I would likely head back to MINI and get a regular MC more lightly optioned than our present MINI which pretty much has every option except wheel upgrades and JCW. I don't know of a car that competes with MINI on the basis of size and economy that is as well built or handles as well that costs either the same or less than a MINI.
The Honda Fit Sport (manual transmission) it would probably be high on the list as a solid, economical car (and it's quite a bit less expensive than a MINI). In other words, I'd be looking for a practical car.

If all MINIs made since 2001 -- including my Chili Red R56 Cooper -- suddenly evaporated into thin air, I'd be looking desperately for a mint example of the closest approximation ever made: a BMW 2002tii.
This one might do.

I used to have a Renault Clio, I loved that car. It saved way more gas than my MINI and I loved that.
When I was chooshing cars my short list came up like this: MINI, BMW 1, Audi A3, Peugeot 207 CC and Pontiac G5.
If I had more money I would love to get MCS convertible, Audi TT, Audi R8, Pontiac Solstice or Audi 44.
I am an Audi lover.
Being realistic my next car would probably be a MCS, I just love MINI <3
