R56 MINI Cooper S tires

So, I can't really find any wheels that I like that don't cost $4000 for a set... which is ridiculous. So, my next thought would be really great, all season tires that perform much better than stock. But of course the 195/55/16 size is kind of wierd... so, looking at a tire size calculator, it appears that the 225/50/16 size would fit fine, and give me a little more tread on the road. Of the tires in that size, the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and Yokohama Advan S4 are top rated, offered great wear and great features. Tire Rack prices are $135, $136 and $131 per tire respectively. Not bad prices at all. Only Michelin as a 40,000 mile warrenty (but who actually drives on 40000 miles on a set of tires??) So, which ones? Does anyone like one brand over the other? I have had great luck with Yokohama, and have always heard good things about Michelin.

Thoughts?

I've had good experiences on other vehicles with Michelin tires, both all season and winter.

I would make sure that a 225/50/16 tire will fit on the stock wheels. My hunch is that this size is outside the available range for a 6.5-inch wide wheel.

Have you been looking in the Wheels, Tires, & Brakes forum here on NAM? Rota makes some good, lightweight, inexpensive wheels for the MCS.

What sort of wheel design are you looking for?

I have Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 (summer) 205/45-17 on one set of wheels. They handle well, but are a bit noisy. Don't know about the all season version.

225 is a stretch for a 6.5" wide wheel. 7 is still a bit of a stretch. to be safe i wouldn't mount 225 on anything below 7.5"

For 225/50-16 TireRack.com lists the rim width range as 6-8". You may be thinking of 225/45-17.

oops my mistake. i still believe 225/50/16 would cause the sidewalls to bulge out or look pinched.

Michelin is overpriced for what it is.

Every one of my tires I've owned has outperformed Michelin tires. Kumho, Yokohama, Nitto, all great manufactuers, and much cheaper than Michelin.

The ASX is a decent UHP tire that can handle weather. Toyo Proxies 4 are good tires as well.

Shouldn't... I run 7" wide rims for the track, with 225 width tires. No issues with bulging.

I guess it depends on the tire (i know hoosiers and toyo RA don't mind narrow wheels at all) as well but I think the OP is using 6.5". .5" is a big difference when your on the edge IMO but my info maybe outdated.

I am running MINI's web spokes w/ stock Dunlop 205/45R17 runflats. I kinda fried them during my last track day. I'm looking for a combined road and track tire until I can afford a second set of wheels (anyone have a used set to sell?). I have the JCW suspension and aero kits. I've read a zillion threads and I'm seriously considering Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R, though I am seduced by the Yokohama Advan A048:

The Yokos don't come in 205/45R17 ... they do come in 215/45R17 and 225/45R17. Will these fit? They might not have adequate wet traction (Tirerack rating 6.3/10) and it seems to rain a lot on track days. I didn't mind the Dunlop runflats because I've never run anything else. Can used tires be shaved?

Reflections?

First things first, 215/40 or 215/45/17 would easily fit. Speedo might be slightly affected but shouldn't be anything significant.

Secondly, and these are my personal opinions, the Bridgestones could be great tires but they are very expensive. My experiences with the Falken RT-615 have sold me on the tires for the rest of my life. Great price, and I am certain that in the dry, they will perform as well as the Bridgestones and Yokos. Also, I am pretty sure the Falkens will perform much better in the wet in comparison to the Yokos. I don't this from my own experiences but the Falkens, at the very least, are as competent a tire as you would need in the wet. I really can not recommend the Falkens enough. They are almost perfect (IMO, perfection is unattainable...).

Again, just my opinion...

Spend the $4000 for the wheels you want.

You only live once, and trust me, it's worth it
