I got my MCS from 10 augusts and it's already and it got already some small updates. They opened the hoodscoop for 1/3 now and added an extra heatshield under de hood.
I live in Belgium so don't know if the VS already have the updated version.
I'm not real wild about all the CF bits and don't plan to add any (except maybe getting the JCW shift **** -- but not for the CF on it). I'm planning to keep the stock scoop and have my sports stripes wrapped into it (like on the Challenge car).
Also, how common is this problem in just normal driving?
It's common in normal driving, people whose scoops are melting certainly aren't all tracking their cars.
It is also possibly a byproduct of the weather. The summer months aren't helping out for sure.

How about painting the CF scoop then wrapping in the stripes? If you're going to integrate those stripes you better make sure that scoop won't ever melt. JMO, though...

Thanks, but that just does not seem a cost effective idea to me.
Buying a CF scoop and having it painted with matching color is probably a lot more expensive than getting the stock scoop replaced under warranty and re-striping it, even if I have to do that several times.
I just noticed that after 10,000 miles of melt-free operation, a combination of hot sun and hot engine finally distorted my scoop to a slight amount. Been watching it since May, after reading the posts here, so I know it happened only a few days ago. Even though it'll wreck the all-MY color scheme of Luigi, I'm thinking of getting the CF scoop.
My '08 Clubman has a turbo heat shield and extra insulation under the hood directly below the scoop. Its too new to see if it will prevent melting, but does indicate the problem has been addressed.

Any info from the 2009 JCWs? Does it look like they've added extra insulation in or around the scoop for them? Those are the only 2009s on the street at the moment...

Hmm, things have felt damn hot for me on top of and under my hood, so I've been opening it when I can. However, now that you say that, there MAY be some extra insulation on the bottom of the hood scoop. I'll look tomorrow and take pictures if I can.

That will surely stop any cool air from entering the engine compartment. Now the hood scoop becomes a faux toy.
Not quite. There are four holes in the hood scoop that do make it through to the engine compartment. I think they're "above" where the padding is in the picture.
EDIT: Yeah, I just looked. The intake from the hood scoop is the narrow black space you see about 1-2" above where the padding starts.
Yes, the grill inside the 2008 MCS air scoop has been opened up to allow for airflow into the engine compartment.
Looking at this picture, that shield's forward end appears to be slightly aft of the plastic scoop. Makes me think the shield has been placed there for some other reason, since it doesn't cover the scoop at all.
