I also got the HiFi and I listen to music in my car more than at home. I think it sounds just fine. Certainly not as good as a modded system, but unless you do the speakers yourself just upgrading them will cost you more than the OEM upgrade. Adding an amp/sub to that will cost $2k.
Tip: using a dock wire (versus a headphone wire) to the Aux jack improves the sound of my iPod tremendously. Cost $7.
Can you point me to the right place to get this dock wire? I have an iPod Shuffle, will it work on that one too?

Thanks.

limited slip = yes

hifi = debatable. get it if you don't plan on upgrading to aftermarket.

Agreed with LSD as important. Cannot easily retro-fit later.

Your call on Hi-fi. I did not have this on mine.

I have also been debating on getting the HIFI upgrade on my mini when I order it (waiting until January so it comes in the spring). I have been driving a 2001 honda accord for seven years now with the standard radio and liked it. Would the standard Mini audio system be comparable/worse/better for someone used to a standard 01 honda system?

I don't think either system is as good as the standard Honda stereo, but I advise you to upgrade to the HiFi so you have better options later. Just look at the cost of upgrade gear and you'll realize that the upgrade now might be worth it.

I sat in Mini's that had both set ups. Wasn't thrilled with either, but definitely put the $500 elsewhere in the car where I thought it was worth it.

Thanks Mini2na and Dwell... the price of the system isn't too much of a burden as I have the money set aside already. I think I'll go for the upgrade (even though I'd like to tell myself I'm still thinking about it) since I've never bought a car with every option I wanted because I was worried about saving money and kicked myself in the future. For example I have a 2001 Honda Accord with manual roll up windows because I wanted to save a few bucks and regretted it after having wrist surgery.
