That's my reaction... WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO THE MINI?! A MINI that happens to be a SUV? No, its more like a SUV that happens to be a MINI.
Look, I can understand the initial change from the original Mini to the BMW group made MINI(i.e. meeting new safety standards, etc.), and the introduction of the Clubman(as a reincarnation of the extended cab models of the original Mini), but a MINI SUV? Unfortunately, I don't think anything's going to stop BMW from creating the Crossman. What's next, a MINI motorcycle or ATV? Why not go for broke and make a MINI motorboat or MINI airplane

The AWD is the only thing I would take from that. An SUV is such a horrible invention. No one needs a frigging SUV, and I mean no one. It's just a luxury social standing vehicle since families get better space with a minivan and haulers get better use out of trucks.
And what the heck is a frigging "cross over" category?

It is BMW expanding the MINI brand but it seems more like they are diluting it and not improving it.They have the Coupe,Clubman and the Cabrio and MINI can't crank out enough of them as it is due to the very strong demand.I would think they would want to move people up to BMW like the X3 instead of the BMW owner's moving to the MINI.
Looking at the majority of negative comments posted on the supplied link seems they agree it is the wrong direction too.

I suppose nobody needs one, but you can't think of any reason someone might find an SUV useful?
I like it. It reminds me of the concepts that preceded the R55. Of course, liking it any buying one are totally different things. Not a problem since I'm sure they'll sell tons of them.

Why tinker with success... MINI should NOT go the way Porsche, Mercedes and BMW all of whow began to want to be all things to all market segments... a Porsche SUV is a shame; R Class MB the Aztec of MB; X6 worse than a Aztec (costs 3 times as much and just as flugy)... all three companies are loosing sales, bumping into a way crowded market, overpriced and poor gas mileage vehicles.
MINI has a successful product line and should focus on variants thereof... AWD, rally versions etc. If this SUV happens I will just shake my head and keep asking WHY
