I'm impressed that Mini did this. Shows that they're on the ball, not wrangling with worthless liability lawyers. Just make a decision and get the thing done. Nice job. I've not burned myself but I'll do it, and you should too. Imagine a friend or someone burning themselves badly on your car. If that happened I don't think you'd scoff at them and call them stupid would you? You'd wish you'd done what Mini asked you to do.

So far I haven't burned myself (but it was probably just a matter of time). When putting my car cover on I have to lean into the car and really stretch to get it up over the antenna. Solution: bought a little folding step for $7 that I keep in the boot. I don't think I'll have them changed.

Just got my MCS back from the dealer's shop. They did the retrofit, the exhaust tips are about 2 inches farther in than they used to be. Otherwise, the appearance of the exhausts is unchanged. The tips are now recessed underneath the rear bumber far enough that you won't lean against them and burn your shin when you brace your legs against the rear bumper.

I'll see if I can get a meaningful picture of this.

Technical Service Bulletin done today

Today I brought Scrappy in for an appointment with the Factory Service Rep regarding continued problems with my '08 MCSa since purchase.I left my car there for them to go over the remaining problem. They found the problem and ordered a part.

Anyway when my SA was writing up my RO I did remind him of the exhaust tips extending beyond the bumper when hot and he said MINI USA has just issued a bulletin to replace them with shorter ones to correct the problem. They happened to have them in stock and were installed. When I got home instead of the exhaust tips sticking way out like they use too when hot they now remain under the bumper.

Now keep this in mind it is not a recall but if you have a problem with the exhaust tips extending beyond the bumper when hot you can get them replaced under a new bulletin issued.

Interesting. Its funny, I was flipping through a mini brochure for R56 and noticed the blue S in it had exhaust tips sticking WAY out. I thought it looked really nice, then looked at mine and noticed they only came to the end of my rear bumper.

My wife said she is always impressed when mine sticks out when it's hot.
Compared to Cobra side pipes, the Mini exhaust tips are not much of a threat.

I wish they would do the same with the other "real" issues, like the melting scoops and fly wheel issues.

I like the way mine stick out and they're going to stay that way. Watch me burn myself tomorrow...

I wonder if this has been fixed on the 2009 MCS?? Any idea guys? Mine is at the Port and waiting for a shipping vessel and I wonder if she'll have to be "fixed" before her adoption.

They did the retrofit on our MINI. I don't know if it its me, but it seems as if our exhaust is louder now..... I think that it is wishful thinking

You must not have read this thread from the beginning. At 6pm on Wednesday, October 1, I reported that my 2009 MCSa has significantly shorter tail pipes than the 07/08 models, so yes, it appears to have been corrected.

The campaign went active on the morning of Sept. 30, so it's difficult to know if the mod has been done on undelivered cars. That depends on when Mini decided to act on this, how quickly the new parts could be engineered, and when the new parts were placed on the factory floor. I would be willing to bet that if the mod wasn't factory installed, your dealer will do the job before delivering the car; the job is supposed to only take 20 minutes.

I agree, I wish Mini would act this quickly with the hood scoop issue. I just had mine replaced; it took two nights, three days to paint-match the new scoop. I don't feel like having to go through that every time the tempurature goes past 95 degrees.

I don't have "before" shots, but here are two pictures of the new tips on my MCS. Pretty much stock, but recessed into the bumper about 2 inches.

I don't see where anyone has ruined it for you.

AFAIK you are free not to have the tips replaced. End of story.

To the majority of MINI drivers out there, I would venture to guess no on would notice the difference between the old and new tips.

But the Company would notice the lawsuits emanating from the old tips users, so to speak.

For example, while the person who wants the old extended tips, that's all fine, but what happens at the shopping mall when a toddler walking with a parent in the parking lot walks past your car. The tips are at a curious child's height. It's real easy for a toddler to get curious and want to touch the hot pipes.

I think yours look fine.

Yes, I'm happy with them; their appearance isn't any different than the original tips. In fact, if I didn't know they had been changed, I would've thought the detailers had simply cleaned the carbon off of them.
