Help - Key Fob's dead

Over the last week the key fob has been intermittent and now, none of the remote buttons work. The car is only 4 months old with only 6000 miles on it. I do not have the convenience package.

What do I need to do?

Have you tried recharging it using the charging slot inside the MINI?

Is the other key fob working? (you should have received two from the dealer at delivery). If it is, use the other one and bring the dead one back to the dealer, and they will either replace the battery or order you a new one if the battery replacement doesn't bring it back to life.
If both key fobs don't work you have a problem other than a key fob issue, and the dealer will need to fix it.

The other fob works fine. The one that died is the one I've used since getting the car. Nearest dealer is 5+ hours away. I'll need to schedule a trip.

Any icons showing up when you insert Dead KeyFob?? Or will car just not start when Dead KeyFob is inserted?? I'm guessing a call to dealer would be a good idea, they will be able to tell you if you need to make the drive or not.

Good Luck!!

If you don't have the convenience package that means you're been inserting the fob in the slot before starting the car right? It should recharge by itself while in the slot so either your fob is bad or the key slot is not doing its job to recharge the fob. Start scheduling a trip...

All keys recharge in the slot (regardless of the package you selected). My dealer had recommended that I swap the key fobs out occasionally. So, now I have a FOB for odd months and 1 for even months ;-) He also mentioned there were no longer batteries, but I believe he was just stating you no longer had to replace the batteries.

I thing I wonder about the original poster with the dead FOB, did you try to make sure the physical key itself was seated correctly in the FOB. I thought I was having trouble with my FOB and so I took the key out of the FOB and put it back in and haven't had problems since. Which... is probably completely unrelated ;-)

Cool!, so just inserting the disc keeps it charged? Rock on MINI!

Not true. The Convenience Access fob uses a non-rechargeable battery. Putting it in the slot does not charge it. With Convenience Access, there is no point in putting it in the slot. Might as well leave it in your pocket or purse.

To the OP,
Have you called the dealer? If it is a faulty fob battery, you might be able to mail it to them. If possible, check to see if the other fob is getting charged porperly.

Sorry - I hadn't read the OP close enough.. I just read the word "package" and associated it with the wrong concept. I hadn't even realized that we could get "Convenience Access" key FOBs.

Why not call the dealer and see if you can mail it to them? They may be able to check out the key fob without needing to have your car. All dealers have key fob "readers" used to write-up service and check your vehicles' service history. It's worth a shot to give them a call, especially if it's just a dead battery.
