The magazine that obtained the 50 mpg was a British magazine. In England they use the imperial gallon which is bigger then an American one. Im not sure by how much by my guess is after the conversion you'll get around 41mpg.
They don't even have the correct picture of the R56 JCW in that article. The picture they show is an R53. Maybe those people test drove a diesel Cooper and they thought it was a JCW!!!

That's just CNet using a stock photo from MINI USA. The AutoExpress article has proper photos.
They mentioned using the "hypermilling" technique to get almost an additional 10% more mileage. It involves short shifting, coasting (which the Mini does well) and a generally light foot. When I do that, my Mini S gets 40 mpg (US) consistantly.
I'm curious.. when you say "short shifting", how short do you mean? I normally shift @ 2.5 - 3k rpm if i'm not in a hurry. Does that count as short shifting?
I don't see how driving a sports car like an economy car is fun. Life is too short.
Especially when the MINI seems to allow for a fair amount of "fun" before the mileage is significantly affected. My local driving (a mix of state and county roads plus some city) yields about 37-38 MPG when I am quite careful over the course of a tankful. If I forget the mileage and just drive like I want (plenty of spirit on those twistie county roads) and a lots of quick acceleration my MPG may go down to 34-35 MPG. Not enough of a difference to forgo the fun.
Wow, some of you guys are getting great mpg. The best mpg of my MCS is only 24 or 25!
I know! I'm getting 22-25 typically... but then again, I live in the city and am only a few miles from work. 5000 miles of city driving = no-go for MPGs!
Ah, well, considering my last car, which I only had for a few months while I waited for this Cooper S, only got 20 on a good day (1996 Mercedes C280) and was as fast as ground peppercorns, I am very pleased with this vehicle.
I must say it does break 34mpg when I'm heading back home for a weekend (all highway)
It is very impressive any way one looks at it!! I have never seen 50 mpg on my OBC ('07 manual Cooper) although I have seen 47 mpg in highway driving and in city driving I'm consistently around 41-42 mpg on the OBC. I know real life mileage may calculate out a bit less.
Hey, is it possible this JCW loaner was set to imperial gallons???

That just means you are driving it like it should be driven
Indeed! A bit off-topic but my driving habits resulted in a speeding ticket last week. They got me with laser. My V1 warned me about the laser but it was too late.
