R56 Brake service question...

Brake service question...
1. Isn't the computer supposed to tell you something needs servicing at start up... sort of obvious like the low air indicator?
2. Why would my rear brake miles to service read 0 miles while my fronts read 31k?
I don't know how long its been in this condition. I discovered this while putting air in the tires after being alerted by the computer.

When you mean "alerted by the computer" do you mean the on-board computer or the one at the dealer? What kind of warning did you get? Have you added (or checked) brake fluid? Mine chimed a few weeks ago, and it turned out to be a little low. No big thing--added some, and it didn't happen again. But, that's on an '07. I'd ask the dealer for a car so young.

2. Good question regarding the rear brakes. You can access the OBC functions for individual services due such as the brakes with the instructions on how to do that on or around page 52 and 53 in the owners manual.
If the rear brakes do indicate 0 miles then it would be best to make an appointment with your SA to check out your Mini plus the vehicle information is also stored in your remote/key fob that he/she can access.

I have replaced rear pads at 74,000 km., but surprisingly the front pads still have plenty of wear left in them. The brake light came on to indicate the rear pads had worn down to the magic 3mm mark that sacrifices the tip of the sensor. I will be more diligent about the fronts so as not to let the sensor wear down before replacing the pads.
