Exhaust Muffler Delete

1. Is it legal to drive on public roads after removing your exhaust muffler? I live in NJ.

2. Will it pass inspection?

3. Do they check to see if you have it?

As far as cops I'm not too concerned, I plan on keeping the OEM beer can tailpipe to keep it looking completely stock. just like this person did:

Thanks!

I was planning on doing something that over the summer. It sounds good. Not sure about the inspection stuff though.

I don't believe the cans themselves do much in the way of decreasing emissions. The cats are responsible for that. As for getting a ticket for a noise violation....well, that could be a problem depending on where you live.

It's done and I'm very satisfied

Sound is amazing, much louder but not obnoxiously so.

sawed off muffler and used clamps and TIG-welding.

very deep when lifting off throttle, mild increase in power and torque

kept stock tailpipe, all in all a tasteful mod, it is perfect

wonder why more people dont do this when it does the same thing as catbacks

materials cost $30-40 compared to $400 - $900 for catbacks

Have you been to the dealer since you did that? What did they say about it, if anything?

It sounds awesome, I want to do it to mine, I just hate to do things like that that aren't easily reversed.

haven't been to the dealer but I will this Sept for my free oil change

its easily reversible, i used clamps so all I'd have to do is switch out the muffler.

Sounds good for just a muffler delete but you aren't gonna have more power from cutting off your muffler especially when there are two cats before the resonator. You should be fine with the emissions and inspection. Mine's a bit more extreme I have the Supersprint header w/catless front pipe but I still use the stock muffler.

any photos of what you did?

I'm sure it won't pass inspection in many states due to noise, but emissions won't be effected by the muffler. If it is reversible, I say go for it and i'll be right behind you.

Oh ok, for some reason I was thinking you welded it. I don't know why I thought that though.

I have my scheduled maintenance next month, so I'll probably do this right after.

interesting...

I wonder what it would be like on a cooper S

since the turbo already baffles/kills some of the sound

went to the dealer to get my free oil change and discovered the 07 models have a cat recall, so they replaced my cat. im sure they had to have noticed my exhaust mod then, if they hadn't heard it. they said nothing so i assume its fine

my friend drives a gli that is twice as loud as mine and he passed inspection with it.

unscrewed the stock tailpipe (there is a tiny screw on the bottom) and put it on the pipe. looks completely stock!
