There's a thread about it in the electrical mods section. There's at least one guy who sells a kit to do it.
This is the only mod I've made which involves surgery (very little of it), and its well worth it.

I make a kit that turns on the sport button when you start up the car. Mach V sells it. It's really easy to install, the installation instructions are available on both the Mach V site and on NAM

For me I have a hard time adjusting to the poor accelerator response without Sports mode engaged. It is just so much easier to launch the car in Sports mode than when it's not regardless of the distance driven.
* Would you be happier (and less lazier) if there was no starter and we had to had crank it to start?

There are a couple of options out there.
there's an inexpensive DIY that uses a resistor, a diode, a cap and a relay. There's AmazingGrando's unit that does the sport mode as well. To give Amazing his due, his unit was out before ours, but it's a single function device and can't be programmed through the buttons. The FES unit does Sport mode, DSC mode selection and if your car has it, can do the auto Start/Stop mode selection. Once installed, the mode can be selected by using the buttons without going to the wiring (I took the wife's clubman in for one of it's free services and just turned the auto sport mode off as to not raise any eyebrows). There's also a unit from KB Technologies that does just the sport mode... I think OutMotoring sells them.
So there are lots of options out there.
Anyway, I like the one I make the best! (who's surprised there). If you're REALLY CHEAP, the DIY does the job. Prices vary from a bit over $40 to a bit under $60. The FES unit is $54.95.
But to answer the OPs question, no the dealer cannot program the car to do it automatically....

...that's why it was worth the $40 to me. $40 for a quicker start and without the fear of embarrassment: what a bargain. I also like the road feel of the steering much better in Sport. Very much dislike the over boosted, feather touch "Cadalic" steering without Sport mode engaged.

That's true, sport mode in the automatic is like trying to control a wild animal. The auto in manual mode is not so bad. My manual 07 was always driven with the sport button on...

Gawd so glad I do not have the Jane Jetson push a button problem (I think in that episode of the Jetsons she had to go to a doctor)
Sorry NOT going to plug in an add on to my 33 thousand dollar car so it starts in sport mode? and if any problems come up because of this 40 dollar add on ya think MINI will cover it?
Now when I start my car I want a 40 dollar add on to do unspeakable things not found in a cartoon.

When I had an MCa Clubman as a loaner, I had to put it in Sport mode to keep it from shifting too soon on the steep winding grade up Hwy 17 over the Santa Cruz Mts. I hadn't figured out the paddle shifters on the drive home from MINI of Mountain View so the Sport button became a transmission control button.
