R56 Didn't see that coming... melted valve cover

All the MINI TSB's and recalls can be found here.
Curious why OC's fan didn't stay on longer if the heat in the car's engine was so hot? -where is the temp sensor that triggers the fan? is it based on water temp or something and not engine compartment air temp's? Seems like an easy fix would be to set our fans to stay on longer after engine shut down. I've always felt that my fan shuts off too quickly ..only stays on for about 10-20 sec's. I'd feel more comfortable if it ran for like 2-4 min's...
What happened to the good old days of aluminum valve covers?? My Porsche has magnesium covers (a bit exotic), yet ...plastic??? I know all new cars have them, yet i'd much rather Carbon Fiber, Aluminum ..colored aluminum, or Kevlar (remember the 959's? -they had kevlar in their engine bay).

If I knew for sure that it would have been ready, I would have signed up for this coming weekend since they're running again at Roebling.
I think I'm going to call them this morning and cancel the tensioner, I'll deal with it later... besides, I'm getting ready to talk to Eddie and see about a head.

....and had many, many fewer systems, safety features and conveniences to boot. Plastic is actually one of the greatest most versatile materials ever invented.

Cost is also a factor, I believe. Plastic is a much better use of oil than burning it. The future is plastic and electric.
However, I'm surprised that ceramics haven't come to play a larger roll. There was a time when it seemed like innovations in ceramics would make a large impact everyday products. I was sort of expecting to see ceramic engines. I have a set of ceramic kitchen kiives, and they are great.
