I don't want to burst your bubble of happiness but be careful because the manual states that you shouldn't go below 30 miles left on the tank because it can cause engine failure. But good job, I got 525 at one point...slowest driving EVER.

Yeah but it is because of sucking stuff off out out of the botoom of the tank and the fact that you would have to reprime the system.

600 mile club
I was able to break 600 miles in my last tank, completed today:
- 8/9-23/2012, mostly my 22 mile one way commute that is 2/3 highway. For this tank I mostly kept it below 65 mph, often 62 or 63 on the highway portion. Warm weather is improving fuel economy, I believe. Tire pressure ~38 psi (cannot tell if that slighter higher pressure matters).
- 607.9 miles, computer said 13 miles left.
- computer said 46.7 mpg.
- Filled it with 13.98 gallons (more than stated capacity! I did not overfill.) So measured fuel economy this tank is 43.5 mpg.
- not as good as my former Insight gen1 (59 mpg overall average), but way more fun! And if I drive more normally (i.e., fun) I am still getting around 40 mpg.
So back to the fun driving!

It pulls in the same amount of fuel, true. The "excess" is dumped back into the tank, generally at a different spot than the fuel pump pickup lives in. The fuel going through the pump helps to cool it, and if there isn't much fuel in there it will run the same fuel through over and over again, so there is a risk of it heating up and not cooling the pump as well.
I don't think it's a big risk, myself. But I don't constantly drive around with the carrots red and the low fuel warning on.
BTW, my next tank was 17 miles short of being a 50 MPG tank. Still over 600 miles, though!
For about the first third of this tank, the OBC was telling me I could go 800 miles on this one. (Adding the miles-to-empty to the trip odometer I reset when I filled the tank.)
I'm now at about 560 miles, and on three carrots. I don't know if I'll make it to 600 before the carrots go red, but it probably will be close to there.

I remember there being a thread for the 1st Gens for those who had 400+ tanks of gas, and wanted to bring the topic up for the 2nd Geners. And of course we have to kick it up a notch.
Has anyone else here broken the 500 mile mark on a tank of gas?
Over the past 8 days I have traveled 501 miles on a single tank of gas. The OBC showed 41.9mpg, but my calculations were 34.41mpg (14.559 gallons of gas on this fill up.)

i have not actually gone over 500/tank yet BUT ...
i had to make a ~400 mile parts run
55mph on cruise, 411 miles round trip, 9.8 gals burned (41.9 mpg), the miles til empty showed 104 miles to go when i filled up
not bad for a cms all4!
next parts run i will "extend" the trip and get into the club!
