It seems as though s/c or turbo manuals can do it, or Justa autos can do it, but maybe the combination is sort of a double negative that is too hard to overcome?
I have a standard s, I'm thinking maybe an automatic s could if you were to drive it in tiptronic and use the paddle shifters? At least a better chance

Yeah I've done 512 with using my steptronic. So that does make a difference then letting my MINI do the work a little.

Sure enough, yesterday's fill up was only 491.5 miles. The OBC thought I had another 30-40 miles range, but the gauge had dropped to 1 carrot.

I'm going to continue to not specifically drive for high mileage and see what that gets me.

Quick question- for you guys who calculate mpg based on how much you put into the tank after x amount of miles- how close is that to the obc? Just curious

Mine has been about 2 - 3 mpg off the car's optimistic calculation. As someone mentioned before, resetting the mileage counter each time you fill up gets it much closer. Otherwise, it retains previous information much longer than one tank's worth.

I use Fuelly.com, because it does the math, but also because it keeps such good track. If you have an iphone or smart phone, you can do it as you pump gas, upload it as you get back into your car... or write your odo or trip odo reading on the receipt and do it later. It also tracks gas price paid, etc.

But just a warning... calculating ACTUAL mileage as opposed to what they obc says, can be a little... deflating. Reality is often so. But, it does give a truer number.

The other important thing is to be consistent in HOW you fill your tank. Always stop at the first click, or whatever you do. As long as you do it the same each time.

Fuelly.com is also good for browsing other people's mileage. You can check out the real life mileage that actual owners get. So you can compare what you are getting, or you can check mileage if you are considering buying a new car, instead of what the EPA says that you might get.

The OBC on my car started out pretty optimistic compared to my trip odometer versus gas station pump calculations. But that changed; it seems to be only a couple of MPG optimistic at this point.

Ditto on the OBC being a couple mph optimistic compared to manual calcs.

My wife is now part of the 500 mile club! Now...she's showing 90 miles to go; risk running out of gas to get to the 600 mile club?

Add another member to the 500 Mile Club!

Most of the driving was done in the rolling hills along I-79 in north central West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, two-lane roads by the Allegheny River towards Warren, PA, and returning to Mo'town after a backpacking trip.

With a range of 57 miles remaining, it was time to fuel-up as the 600 Mile Club was out of reach, and a fuel pump too expensive to replace!

The on board MPG calculation was 46.9. My hand calculated MPG was 41.8.

Well it's cheating I suppose, since I'm running an R50.

505 miles on 12.54 gallons for 40.2 mpg. This is the 3rd tank of gas on a new Cooper.

And yes I was driving like an angel...

Cheers,

Charlie

No 500 mile club again for me. 497 and change this tank. I could have made it easily (still had two red pips on the gauge) but the station I prefer was right there, so...

317 on my last tank.. Seriously don't know how you guys do it. Probably has something to do with me not liking getting passed and spending 90% of my highway time in the left lane going 75-80
But compared with my old car(2001 Acura mdx) I'm still getting twice as much mpg, 14 to 27ish so I'm a happy camper!

Well, winter gas, cold weather, snow tires: not getting excited about tank range again until the spring.

Once I do some more modding to my MINI I might not be able to reach this club again but, we will see.

I've gotten almost 600 on my 2012 "S" 6-speed when it was stock and if I was driving very conservatively.

Since I've installed the NM intake and had the NM ECU tune done, I've still been able to break 500 but it's hard. I think this is due to me driving a bit more spiritedly as well.

Back into the 500 mile club. I had about 510 on it when I hit two "carrots" and started to get the warning on start-up.

Filled today with 556.9 miles on the trip meter, putting 13.555 gallons in. Just over 41 MPG for the tank.

It went to two "carrots" on Thursday, at 511 miles. I filled up today, at 526 miles, putting ~12.8 gallons in. Giving me just over 41 MPG.

I think another trip to the 600 mile club is exceedingly unlikely for me any time soon.

Which hasn't been updated for about 2 weeks.
Simply yes or no would have sufficed.

I used to have an easy commute on I75 that was approximately 75miles each way. I routinely got 500 miles to a tank with an R56 S hatch with the 6spd manual. Relaxed 65-70 mph cruising with a careful foot routinely brought 35+ MPG. Half the battle of reaching high numbers is knowing the tank capacity. I usually refill close to empty. If the tank goes low enough all the carrots on the gauge disappear! One of the most terrifying experiences driving this car was blank range remaining bar, coasting to a station (no sputtering). I needed 14.48 gal to fill the tank, and as far as I know it officially hold 14.5.
Record was 524 miles with "winter" Florida weather and notoriously flat ground.
Best MPG ever was 41.4 driving 55-60MPH on rural NC highways. Scenery always helps range.
The engine braking with downshifts delivered incredible results in the upper 30's when tackling steep mountains. This is the best high altitude car I have driven in gliding around curves and conquering 12% gradients.
I have an on/off mentality with either performance driving or economy driving. Consciously seeking one or the other allowed high mileage even with passes through deals gap in low gear. This is a momentum car and swift cornering can actually succeed at both missions. While I feel like many manufacturers present optimistic numbers, my Mini S responds to good habits unlike anything I have driven. Sad to see this engine go in the next cars.

Put 576.8 miles on the last tank. Put in 13.14 gallons for just under 44 MPG. Got to two red carrots at about 535 miles, I think.
