Why not just use the spare fob's metal key for your "hide a Key" and keep the spare fob sans metal key in the car. Why do you feel the need for an extra metal key since the spare fob's metal key would be useless anyway with the spare fob stored in your car?

Well I feel like a newb. I thought that the FOBs with CA recharged when in the dash slot. I just went to look at the spare fob and sho nuff, you pop off the cover and there is a watch style battery. And I have read the manual but not in a long time.

+1 for NAM...again.

If you look at your fob and the in dash holder you will see there are no contacts for a physical (electrical) connection to charge anyway. So with CA putting the fob in the dash does nothing (except cut the ACC off when you remove it).

You don't need contacts to recharge a battery, consider an electric toothbrush.

True but the standard rechargeable fob doesn't use induction charging. So if the CA fob had a rechargeable battery why would MINI use induction on it and contacts on the standard fob?

I really don't know, I just wanted to point out it's possible, maybe MINI wanted to make it water resistant.

Then they wouldn't have put a unsealed pop off battery door on the back.

Good point, I just felt a little nervous about storing the ridiculously expensive oem metal key outside the car. I would have preferred to procure duplicate (less expensive) metal key from a locksmith for that purpose.

Don't believe a locksmith can cut the key (or obtain a blank) but might be worth a try. However if you they can then you could just replace the original with a duplicate if you lose it and still not spend any extra now.

Cars with comfort access have the replaceable battery. The cars without, charge the fobs nimh battery through induction in the fobs dash slot. The reason for using the changeable battery in the CA cars is for the fact that the fob will stay in your pocket most of the time and NOT get charged. Them engineerrrrsss is pretty smartz.

If you find out how to get a spare key, I would like to get one also. I like to keep a spare key in my wallet.

Just called my local dealer, he quoted me a price of $57. He also told me that the dealer can not cut the key. The dealer has to send a copy of your driver's license and a copy of your proof of ownership to Mini USA to get the key and have it cut.

Same with BMW's motorcycles.
