Going to check out a cooper S in 20 minutes..looking for advice

Its at a BMW dealer in LA. It is not CPO, however..does anyone advise against checking it out since its not CPO? 2007 with 21K on the odometer, asking $18,500

Well, the warranty runs 4 years/50,000 miles....and it is also still within the free maintenance period as well until 36K....

The price sounds pretty good for an 07, especially if it has some extras on it.

Good Luck!

Do you feel lucky? My wife recently bought a CPO '06 with 46k miles from a dealer. Although it had a 90-day full warranty, we got a PPI at our independent shop anyway. My thinking: it's a used MINI, so it needs a close look. I also got the Carfax, and tracked down the service history at another dealer. Eyes wide open.

Thank you for the advice, guys.

I didn't buy the car. I guess it was partially my fault because I didn't do my homework. I thought I'd go in there spending the 18,500 + interest + gap + warranty. They told me 9.75% interest over 60 months, then when my mom asked if she could co sign, they dropped it down to 6.75, which was decent. But then they dropped the bomb on me and tried to charge $3K for the maintenance warranty, and $3K for the service warranty. I had no idea that a mini warranty would cost three thousand dollars.

Is the maintenance warranty worth purchasing?

I may just go to carmax to buy one..I know their maxcare warranty plan is cheaper than what BMW wanted to charge me. They magically dropped my interest to 4.5% when I was on my way out the door, but I was still too far over my budget. I went in there thinking I'd be paying 22 - 23K for the car with interest and a warranty, but it came out to about $26K. I think I have a lot of homework to do.

Matt..definitely check that car out. It was REALLY clean and in great shape. Drove really nice. It seemed like the clutch engagement point was up a little high, but I've been reading about it and its apparently pretty normal for these cars.

edit: Matt..that dealer was pretty shady (its to be expected). They offered me $1,000 for my trade in, but it clearly stated on their appraisal paperwork that the trade in was worth $1,500. They also lied about what interest rate I qualified for because our interest rate went down about every 45 minutes...play hardball with them if you decide to buy it.

Thanks for the heads up, man... There's a really nice one down towards San Diego, they want $16k for it... 38k miles, same thing as the black one...

I will not be financing through BMW... Did you get them to drop the price of the car down any? When I go see it, I'm going to request 16.5k out the door. Well, at least aim for that price.

Edit: Bobby, did you notice any rattles with the car... And the car is cloth, right? Did it smell like cigarettes? Haha, I'm trying to save a trip down there if possible.

they said they'd knock off $200.

original sticker said something like 22,900..then it got knocked down again to ~20K, now they're asking 18,500. They didn't want to budge. They had to jump it when I got there, I guess they haven't had anyone really interested in it.

That's completely nuts... They're asking 18.9k on AutoTrader.

Looks like I am going back to pick up the car today! I was able to work some numbers with them, and I'm going to sell my car to carmax for $700 more than what Mini offered me.

One thing that I noticed that was a little odd, was on each CORNER of the front bumper, I found a thick film, light orange in color. Both small pices of film only covered the corners of the bumper...probably about an inch long. Has anyone ever seen this? I hope it is not an indication that the bumper has been repainted.

I'm also a little concerned that the Mini isn't certified. I know the dealer will lie if I ask why it isn't certified, so if any of you know why, please let me know.

BobbyV... I'm feeling pretty good* about mine... 2008 MCS with a few options plus the seller (private/OO) included a full set of 17" ASA's with brand-new Michelin winter tires to go with the Kuhmo's and 17" BBS's (8 tires/8 rims). Mileage was 23K, and the price was $19,500. Did a carfax, clean, service records with local Mini dealer.

* I have my first hiccup as I have a coolant leak. But it will be fixed under warranty. I love the car, clutch does engage high up and the return spring is pretty beefy LOL. You'll have a blast driving it.

I ended up buying it and I'm REALLY happy with the car. I have to take it in to the dealer to get the secret compartment unlocked and the front left tire makes a strange creaking noise when I accelerate out of first gear...but other than that the car is great!

I ended up getting one the other day too! Haha.

I got an '07 MCS, dark gray metallic with white roof, leatherette interior with checkered metal accents, xenon headlights, rear fog, sport package and the panoramic moonroof.

Tomorrow I'm going to be getting rid of the white bonnet stripes (they're a little scratched up and slightly faded).

I'm torn between putting a set of H&R sport springs on it to drop it a little, or an Alta cold air intake.

But future plans include, cat back, Alta accessport, intercooler and then a downpipe.

Are you going to any meets any time soon?

Couple of questions. Doesn't CPO mean it's got 6 years and 100K miles of warranty? (post 3) Not just a 90 dayer...

No way on earth the maintenance plan is worth it...

Perhaps the extended warranty, depending on what it actually covers.

Hell, my "I ordered it cause there wasn't one like it in the country" 2010 MCS was only $28.5K (plus tax and tags..) Free floor mats too...lol WHEEE!!!

Yes CPO is 6 / 100 warranty rather than 4 / 50

Thanks guys! Yeah I do want to make it out to some meets. I'm hoping some Mini owners would be interested in cruising PCH, etc...love doing that. With the car comes a really friendly and outgoing owner community. I had a Subaru a few years ago and really missed that aspect of owning a car. I actually took it out already to a large meet/cruise. I'm at the beginning..there's a few SCMM Minis at the end.

I'm glad that you're enjoying it, Bobby.

I've been having fun with mine until today.

Went into limp mode, but no CEL. :/

Oh, well... I had a appointment today for some warranty work.

Rattles and all.
