Spring Install. hard?

Hi, I want to get the NM springs for my r56 cooper S. Is installing them a really hard job? I have a backyard mechanic that can probably do it, but if it requires disassembling half of the car then I would rather not. I would appreciate any input on the issue, Thanks.

No, it's not terribly hard. I did mine myself after doing some searching and found this very detailed guide posted by fellow NAM members.

It is sometimes hard to get the front struts off the car. I would think the spring compressors are mandatory especially if you have the sports suspension as it is hard to compress the springs to fit the hat. Also, be very careful taking the hat off the spring assembly as the spring is under compression. If could easily spring lose and hurt someone if you do not use the spring compressor.

Need some clarification - - - The instructions above indicates the need for a BMW socket # 312 2 210 (hazet) and the DIY pix shows a pre 07 model. I have seen another DIY with an 07 used for demonstration but no mention of the special BMW socket. I have an 08 to do the work on but would like to know for sure if this socket is necessary for my model year. Any help is appreciated....

I didn't use the BMW socket when I changed mine, 2010 MCS. Didn't have to remove the fenders either. If you have access to spring compressors, they would help greatly but I didn't and lived through the experience, just be careful. Good luck.

A cheap set of spring compressors from Harbor Freight worked fine for me. I have also used buckle straps. I made a modified tool by grinding two flat spots on the side of a socket and attached vise grip for a handle, then you can insert the allen wrench through the top.

I also have the harbor freight spring compressor tool, but only me doing the work, figured I'd be safe...

Not too bad. A bit time consuming, but saving $110 / hour @ 4 hours min (quoted) I trolled through the job. I actually dropped the springs in the front without removing the strut from the top mounts. Looking back, it probably would have been easier/quicker to do so. The rears are a snap. I installed the rear springs and the H-sport comp sway bar in about 2 hours time.

Did you have to drop the rear subframe to do the swaybar?

I did..but I dropped the outter bolt and only loosened the inner bolt about half way. After that i just pried down the subframe and angled the bar out. I had a couple buddies working on the car with me, so it was pretty cake to do. Especially since I had the rear shocks dropped.

Just drop one side and loosen the other if you don't have extra hands. It works pretty good. Good luck.
