- I've never understood when people say "I'd hate having a manual in traffic" I drive in traffic all the time. So you have to use your left leg a bit more - why is this such a big deal? Driving a stick has never bothered me in traffic, and it is so much more fun on open road.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that a bad idea, using the clutch to hold the car? Sounds to me like you're causing some premature wear there.

I've never used the parking brake on hill either, it just seemed like too much trouble. But I haven't used the clutch to keep me stopped on a hill either.

I once had a Studebaker that had a hill holder too, so it's not new technology!

I don't like how the automatic MINIs look though.

Congratulations! You won't regret it.

Getting new S and u want the stick

Get a current S driver to take u out and show u the technique. Try turning on the Sport mode if you have it as it's addictive.
If you in Cincinnati, SanFrancisco, or another hillytown u may want the auto as a novice can wear out a clutch on hills.
There are many stick driving help videos about the MINI on Utube..

The manual trannys on the MINI now days have "Hill Assist". It hold the brakes on for a few seconds so you can get moving without rolling down hill.

I've driven the auto and even though it's a relatively good auto, I still don't want to pay EXTRA for less interaction, more drivetrain loss, more complexity, etc.

I'm not militant about it, but there are legitimate reasons to buy a manual just like there are legitimate reasons to buy an auto, though most of the time it's personal preference.

Meh, I bought mine new off the lot with more extras than the one I built on the MINI USA site, it was also cheaper than my on line build. The auto trans was free, due to a sales promotion.

Yeah, that was a nice promotion for those wanting the "freebies".

I was just giving a couple other reasons why SOME people might choose not to go with the auto.
