Moving on

Well, it's gone. GTI comes in Monday, and I did not even have to go another round with the dealer over the windshield stress crack and the numerous rattles they could never fix. It's been fun. None of the problems ever actually left me on the road, but then again, I have only had one that ever did and that was induced by a mechanic. It was a great car to drive. Can't say it was a great car.
Much thanks and so long to those whom I have conversed through this forum. I think I'll use the local DCmini forum to sell my wheels, seat/spare conversion and carbotech pads I never used. I have a 43rd scale in my case to remind me.

What year & model did you have?
Where were the squeaks coming from?

09 S. They tried to "fix" the hatch 4 times. More rattles from the rear body than I could trace down. No excuse for a modern car. One problem is the bad design of the hatch inner cover. Not held tight when snapped in place.

That's interesting, I still haven't had a single rattle or problem yet.

Had the usual rattles in my dash but it was an easy fix, and I do know how those noises can drive one nuts.

Wonder if they ever replaced the striker for the boot lid ? What they usually replace to end that rattle. Could even be a TSB on it.....Part No. 3 here.

Sorry to see ya go TVR. I see GTi's on occasion and they all share the same laundry list of issues with our MINI. Including but not limited to: Gasket leaks from oil pan, valve covers and seals, and front control arm bushings have to be replaced after 50K miles.....

Best of luck.

Try here for VW info: www.vwvortex.com
I had five VW/Audi cars: Four really good ones and one real dog that ate me alive when the warranty expired.
Good luck with the GTI.
You didn’t say what year, but I’ll guess one of the new style Mk VI GTI.
DSG or Manual?
My VW’s were all Manual, but the DSG really tempted me when I made my last purchase.
DSG was not available on that model/year otherwise I’d have gone that route.
Struggled between the MINI and the new GTI, but came down on the MINI side of the fence – this time
VW dealers/Service can be hit or miss.
I read horror stories on Vortex and had local area friends tell me of their woes. I’d use the same dealer that they did without issue most of the time.
Again: Good luck

I don't think you should expect better quality from the VAG...

I had an '07 GTI. Nice car. Mine had a random terrible smell that came from the vents. Smelled like old cheese or dirty socks. Had to have the evap system and vents cleaned three times and it still came back just before I traded in the car. The smell was something that VW was aware of but did not change the system for the next gen. Good luck with that.

My sister's BF just got a '11 GTI which he let me drive. The power is really nice. I think the best way to describe it is that the GTI has a really civilize in the way it applies the power. The Mini is more like an excited puppy ready to go for a run. The GTI is nice but i like the Mini!

I had an older GTI as well. So many problems with it that I never bought another VW again. Got so much cr*p from the nasty dealer.

No doubt all car marques have their issues. Mini and VW just has a higher probability of it than normal.

A family member of mine has a GTI. Great car and power. Lots of utility and fun to drive.

The DSG is the only issue he's had and it looks like its going to be an expensive thing to deal with. Already starting to get clutch slipping and getting quotes upwards of $3000 to replace. Got to love that even though you have no clutch pedal to operate, both of the clutches are still wear items. Hopefully you went with a manual.

Funny this thread as I got rid of my 2008 GTI for my MINI. The DSG was one headache after another...

Great car and great transmission..when it worked.

Its condensation on the evaporator. The dealer said many manufacturers deal with the same problem. Audi is part of VW so I'm not surprised an Audi had the problem. Smells are usually associated with molds and mildew. I cannot believe a smell coming from the vents would not be harmful to a persons health. My wife didn't even want toride in my car. VW is aware of the problem and I believe it should be a recall issue.

Mildew, yeah that's it.... My dad retired from the Ford plant in KCMO, told me many times about banana peels and other stuff from somebody's lunch getting tossed inside the doors or dash or under a seat when someone had a bad day!

Maybe somebody got a limburger cheese sandwich in their lunch box and couldn't finish it

Good luck with the move. Hopefully VWs have gotten better about squeaks and rattles, but when I had my 2004 .:R32, the boards were full of complaints. Mine was rattle free, but unfortunately I only had her for a little over a year... In that year of ownership, though, she left me stranded on the side of the road once due to a computer glitch, and was in for service multiple times for warranty work. But a blast to drive.

Enjoy!

And that's the reason GM has been thought of as making crappy quality cars and almost went bankrupt.
